Pestana Carvoerio

By: Golf Shake | Thu 03 Sep 2015

Portugal has long-established itself as one of the world’s leading golf destinations. With superb weather almost The Algarveguaranteed throughout the year and a fantastic selection of holiday and tournament courses, the Algarve has proven to be a popular location for decades. Significant investment has gone into this area since the 1960s, while the Pestana Golf Resort in Carvoeiro offers excellent value for money and a four-star quality to meet all needs and expectations.

There are two golf courses on-site – Pinta and Gramacho, in addition to a layout at nearby Silves, which is off the main property. It is an outstanding introduction to Portugal’s south coast. In addition to ample playing opportunities, accessibility is another strength of the resort, with it being situated just a 45 minute drive west of Faro Airport.

Region, Golf and Accommodation

With 115 apartments and 169 villas all within the resort, there are a number of accommodation options, all of which are wonderfully furnished and decorated. Set in beautiful gardens, there is a sense of tranquillity and peace to the living quarters, which all boast excellent facilities; including washing machines and televisions.

In addition to the golf, there are other recreational activities on offer at the resort. These include a state-of-the art tennis academy, bowling greens, basketball courts, swimming pools, five-a-side football pitches and even a beauty salon for those who would prefer to pamper themselves. There are even saunas and Jacuzzis to help guest unwind after a day of playing and exploring.

Further potential activities include horse riding and water sports, all of which are organised by the resort. And in the evening there is the chance to experience themed dinners and BBQs, with the two on-site restaurants also being able to boast outdoor terraces for diners to enjoy. It is certainly fair to conclude that Pestana has something for everybody.

Looking at the main attraction – the golf courses. Since opening for play in 1992, Vale da Pinta has become highly regarded as being one of the best designed in the Algarve. That lofty billing has brought with it an understandable stature and prestige, which has seen the layout host the final qualifying school of the European Senior Tour for eight consecutive years.

With Bermuda grass having been imported during the laying out of the course, Pinta is a highly strategic and challenging design, but retains a playability that will be a welcome relief to visitors of all standards. Excellently bunkered with intriguingly deceptive greens, the course will satisfy the tastes and skills of every golfers who treads on its fairways.
The second on-site course, Gramacho is an exceedingly interesting and unique layout, with 18-holes and 27-greens allowing for an unprecedented level of flexibility in the setup of the course. Designed by American Ronald Fream and three-time major champion Nick Price, this is a dynamic championship course that will test and exhilarate players.

The holes have all been intelligently laid out by the design partners, combining the natural topography of the land and ancient trees, with the characteristics of a contemporary golf course. It all makes for a very satisfying experience, both visually and technically from a playing perspective.

Away from the main resort, the course at Silves is arguably the most purely and authentically Portuguese of the lot. Situated at the foot of Monchique Mountain, the course features some breathtaking views of the surrounding area, overlooking palm trees and olive gardens.

It possesses an enjoyable variety of holes, with water hazards featuring prominently on a number of them, particularly the tenth and 13th.  These aquatic features enhance the course with an aesthetic quality that blends immaculately in with the traditional countryside that surrounds it.

Naturally, there will be time to explore much of the region, and to potentially sample many of the other courses that have secured the Algarve as one of the great golfing destinations in Europe.

The village of Carvoeiro features a number of highly regarded bars and restaurants, offering a relaxed but atmospheric nightlife. There are also a number of spectacular beaches within a few miles of the settlement, which provides an opportunity to sample the gorgeous climate and catch the rays.

There will also be a chance to explore many of the nearby towns, including the historic Monchique, which features a number of stunning views, in addition to outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling. Silves is also worth visiting, with its status as the former capital of the Algarve providing it with an historic significance, while the popular town of Lagos is famed for boasting a vibrant and colourful nightlife, which will undoubtedly prove attractive to visitors.

The Bottom Line

The Pestana Resort in Carvoeiro can offer some of the best, affordable golf breaks in the Algarve. With a fantastic resort, complete with excellent and varied facilities, combined with enticing golf courses, spending time at this establishment is an opportunity to sample the very best that Portugal has to offer holidaymakers.

With historic towns and sumptuous beaches, there is much more to the region than the excellent resort, which will ensure for a well-rounded and memorable experience. Thousands have enjoyed the delights of the Algarve, and the Pestana Golf Resort is among the very best that it has. If you’re looking at staying within a budget and getting value for money, this is the place for you. It is most certainly worth your time to investigate further.
