Where to Stay in Marbella For a Golf Break

By: Derek Clements | Thu 17 Nov 2022

MARBELLA is one of the most famous holiday destinations in Spain. It is, of course, famous for its mix of night clubs, beach bars and shopping.

It has a reputation for being a party destination and while it is certainly possible - and easy - to drink and dance the night away, Marbella - or Marbs as it has become known - has far, far more to offer both holidaymakers and golfers, including the spectacular Los Monteros Spa & Golf Resort.

If night life is your thing then you must visit Puerto Banus and head for the marina that gives Marbella its reputation as a millionaire’s playground. Its small port is packed with huge yachts, while Ferraris, Bentleys and Rolls Royces line the streets.

Marbella is an ideal destination for a family holiday. The main stretch of beach is the Playa de la Fontanilla, which runs along the Paseo Maritimo and the southern edge of Marbella; if you head further west, beyond the city centre, you’ll find the city’s fishing quarter and the lovely Playa Bajadilla.

Marbella Old Town may come as something of a surprise. This compact barrio extends up the hill from the ringroad and its flower-filled streets and colourful squares provide ample opportunities for becoming lost. Its central square is the Plaza de los Naranjos: filled with the dainty orange trees for which southern Spain is famous, it’s the perfect place to stop for tapas as you explore.

Santa Clara

The Golf Courses

Santa Clara Golf Club

Santa Clara was designed to keep the surrounding landscape as natural as possible, keeping the original features in place and constructing the par 71 with respect to the natural wildlife and vegetation, creating a fantastic result. Measuring just under 6,500 yards, the layout is a great test for golfers, incorporating carries over water, strategically placed bunkers and tough undulating greens, this is a memorable course that will make you want to come back and play again. The famed “Santa Clara Corner” which consists of the 12th, 13th and 14th holes are likely to make or break your round. Requiring good length and tight lies, the course guarantees an enjoyable experience offering a true test of ability.

South Course, Guadalmina

The South Course measures 6,683 yards and is the second oldest course on the Costa del Sol  and is a real test of accuracy. Many of the tees require precise placement on the fairways due to the private gardens surrounding the course.

The 14th can challenge even the lowest handicappers as tall pines line the fairway, with a strategically placed bunker in front of the green, waiting to swallow up anything short. This stunning course is characterized by the fairways that wind through the shade of ancient trees. They are wide, free of rough, and are perfectly maintained throughout the year.

The signature hole is the 11th, providing spectacular views of the Mediterranean.

North Course, Guadalmina

The North Course, designed by Folco Nardi, measures 6,303 yards. It features rolling terrain and water features.  The fairways are wide and undulating so you can go with a driver off the tee. However, watch out for the Guadalmina River, as it meanders through the course collecting any stray balls that cross its path.

The course is not as challenging as the South and is perfect for the average player.  The signature hole on the North course is the par 4, 11th. Careful consideration of the tee shot is needed to avoid the lake and bunkers protecting the green.

Marbella Golf Club Resort

Designed by the legendary Dave Thomas, the front nine features three consecutive par 5s, which not only represent a severe test early in the round but also offer some of the most picturesque scenery on the golf course. The tee on the seventh is the highest point on the course and provides a panoramic view of the coastline, Gibraltar and across to Africa. It is a par 73 that features many well-placed bunkers and several water hazards. The view from the elevated 18th tee is worth the green fee alone.

La Quinta Golf

La Quinta Golf & Country Club

La Quinta is a 27-hole parkland designed by former Ryder Cup player  Manuel Pinero. Each 9-holes blends into the natural landscape which provides panoramic views of Marbella's golf valley and is widely regarded as being one of the most beautiful courses in the area and a fantastic place to play golf in Marbella.

Los Arqueros

Los Arqueros was designed by the late Seve Ballesteros and is set amid the Rhonda Hills, with fantastic views over the Mediterranean coastline, this peaceful setting is an idyllic backdrop for your golf in Marbella. The greens are immaculate and the tranquil setting should help you to concentrate on a testing golf course that demands accuracy from the tee.
