Experience the Spectacular Magic of Praia DEl Rey
Portugal is blessed with many revered destinations for golfers, but none are more spectacular than Praia D’El Rey, which is simply magical. Situated 50 miles to the north of the stunning capital city of Lisbon, this wonderful venue is located within Amoreira, Obidos, and boasts two 18-hole courses that rank among the finest in Europe.
In terms of accommodation, there are several options to consider, but for something really special, the luxurious Marriott Praia D'El Rey Golf & Beach Resort 5* is hard to surpass. There are 179 bedrooms (including nine luxurious suites) featuring breathtaking views views of the ocean and the golf course. The two on-site restaurants are the Romy, a fine dining experience that serves Mediterranean cuisine, and the Atlantic Grill, which offers a more informal atmosphere to spend your evening.
Among the facilities, the resort possesses three swimming pools, including a Jacuzzi. There are many outdoor activities to sample as well. Watersports are available just outside the resort and other sports like horse riding and mountain biking are also on offer, making a visit to Praia D’El Rey a fully rounded experience.
Praia D’El Rey
Voted the third best course in Portugal by Golf World Magazine in 2004, Praia D’El Rey was designed by Cabell B. Robinson and opened it’s doors in 1997, showcasing two contrasting halves that make for a thrilling round. The front nine is known for its parkland feel to it, running in and out of the pine trees, while the back nine offers some of the best links-style golf in the country, with several holes hugging the Atlantic Ocean, providing fantastic vistas of the sea, dunes and back towards the pine forest.
Golfshake Ambassador Rob Treanor played Praia D’El Rey in 2018 and described the experience in this Feature Review.
West Cliffs Golf Links
20 years after the original course was unveiled, a sister layout joined Praia D’El Rey in 2017, with the revelatory West Cliffs Golf Links drawing instant acclaim. This is a pure links that takes full advantage of its Atlantic Ocean location, blending into the surrounding landscape in a seamless manner that defies its youth. Presenting a new clubhouse with facilities and restaurant to match the quality of the course, it's easy to see why West Cliffs has become such a critical favourite.
When ex-Golfshake staff member Owen Davies visited West Cliffs, he described it as being the best new course in Europe, while more recently, Golfshake's Kevin Paver shared his thoughts on the course and Praia D’El Rey in his Stay & Play VLOG.
If you want to play two incredible courses in an unforgettable setting, then Praia D’El Rey and West Cliffs represent a jewel in the sparkling crown of golf in Portugal, making this is a unique and memorable experience.
