Nike Golf Signs Frenchman Romain Wattel

By: Golf Shake | Wed 14 Jan 2015

Nike Golf has announced the signing of Romain Wattel, with the Frenchman set to make his debut in the Swoosh at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship on January 15, 2015.

Wattel enjoyed an impressive 2014 season, finishing in 28th-place in the Race to Dubai, a career best for the 24-year-old. He recorded eight top-10 finishes during the campaign, including a T3 placing at the prestigious Dubai Desert Classic and a T6 at the BMW Masters, the opening event of the Final Series.

‘I’m delighted to be taking the next step in my career with such an iconic brand as Nike,’ commented Wattel.

‘I’ve enjoyed working with the Nike Golf engineers and testing the equipment, and I just can’t wait to get started this week in Abu Dhabi. The innovations behind the new Vapor range are incredible, and I’m confident that the equipment can help to take my game to the next level,’ he added.

Amongst the new product Wattel will game this week will be the new Vapor Speed driver, as well as the Vapor Pro and Pro Combo irons, and the RZN Black golf ball.

Born to marathon-running parents in Montpellier on January 10, 1991, Wattel competed in karate as a youngster and was a keen follower of French football club Paris Saint-German, but golf was where his true passion lay.

As a 19-year-old, Wattel shot to prominence, as he became only the fifth amateur to win on the Challenge Tour when he sealed victory at the 2010 ALLIANZ European Strasbourg-Golf de la Wantzenau by three shots.

Before turning pro, Wattel helped France to win the 2010 Eisenhower Trophy team event in Buenos Aries, and won his place on the European Tour by finishing ninth at the 2010 Qualifying School.

‘We have long been impressed by Romain’s talent, his work rate and devotion to improvement and are therefore delighted he has chosen to join our roster of Tour staff,’ said Robin Murray, Nike Golf EMEA Director of Sports Marketing.

INFORMATION: The new Vapor range of woods and irons is available in Europe from Jan 31. 2015
