Has my summer of golf come to an end?

A bit of a strange one from me this week - as going forward over the next few weeks a personal project I have recently undertaken may spell the end of golf for a while, so these weekly columns may be a little less frequent.

I have at least played some golf, after the holiday, then a week with my youngest son, I finally managed to step out onto the very yellow looking turf at Felixstowe on Saturday morning.

It was interesting to see where my game would be given that I haven’t played for what seemed like forever and what practice I have done hasn’t been a lot.

Rocking up at 6:30am fresh out the car onto the first tee didn’t seem to phase me as I bashed one straight down the middle about 300 yards - the thinned wedge from there led to a bogey, though. Love golf.

But all things considered, I managed to knock it round in about seven over and win my friendly match against my buddy 3&2 and it was made even sweeter for the tenner I took off him.

I was then back at Felixstowe on Sunday for the 2026 Coronation Cup, which is a 36 hole black tee medal. Although my body was there in spirit, it wasn’t there physically as I had spent 10 hours on Saturday (after 18 holes of golf) ripping up carpets, underlay and other various parts of flooring. I don’t want pity. I brought it on myself...

Started really well, solid par - with a great up and down - on the first then a lovely two-putt birdie on the par 5 second. Unfortunately, I got into some bunker trouble on the third hole - these are two new bunkers that I hadn’t played out of previously and found out the hard way that there was a LOT of sand in them, the first attempt didn’t go very far and ended up back in my rather deep footprint, two more whacks at it later and at least I had a putt for a double, which I missed.

Felixstowe

It was steady golf from there though and I stood on the 11th tee only four over with the triple but a lost tee shot there, and a few other loose shots all added up to an 82 (+10). I wasn’t looking forward to the second round of the day, mainly because when I sat down for lunch, getting back up again was way harder than I had wanted it to be.

Even after a double on the first, I only dropped a shot on two other holes on the front nine, but a double on 10 followed by a double on 11 (that 11th hole can get in the bin, by the way!) meant that when I added it up at the end, the three doubles and three bogeys totalled an 81 (+9) and +19 for the two rounds.

Given I had zero expectations, little practice, and a body that just didn’t want to be there at all, the fact I managed to get round 36 holes should be celebrated and there was, in spells, some really good golf, so it was actually a nice way to finish for a couple of weeks.

So, that might be me for a couple of weeks, we will see, unless anything seismic happens that I feel the need to find 20 minutes to sit down and throw up my opinion on.

I hope everyone is enjoying their golf if you are getting it in. Go low folks.
