Who is going to win The Open? I wish I knew.
I can’t wait for the tournament to start at what is one of my favourite venues, and here are 10 men who would expect to be in contention on Sunday.
But if you fancy identifying some potential outsiders, then you need to read this too!
Scottie Scheffler (15/2)
The defending champion is certain to be there or thereabouts but he has developed an unfortunate habit of failing to finish off the job when in contention. But write him off at your peril…
Chris Gotterup (25/1)
Arguably the best player in the world right now. Nobody has won more than Gotterup in the past 12 months and he has proved that he can cope with links courses.
Viktor Hovland (35/1)
Who knows which version of Hovland will turn up this week? If it is the one who claimed the recent Travelers Championship then the rest of the field had better watch out. Notorious tinkerer!
Tommy Fleetwood (18/1)

There will not be a dry eye in the house if Fleetwood, a local lad, wins at Royal Birkdale. He knows the course inside out and continues to play with a remarkable level of consistency.
Jon Rahm (22/1)
His class is beyond dispute but he has generally struggled in the majors since his defection to LIV. Will need some patience as, like everybody else, he is going to get some odd bounces.
Tyrrell Hatton (33/1)
The volcanic Englishman’s behaviour leaves a lot to be desired but he always seems to produce his best at the majors. If he can keep his cool he could finally make the breakthrough.
Cameron Young (33/1)
Many will claim he is now the best current player not to have won a major and it is hard to disagree. Took time to learn how to win but has now acquired a taste for it and will surely contend this week.
Rory McIlroy (8/1)
Looks underprepared and, frankly, his Masters win aside, is having a poor season. Will be praying his driver behaves because you can’t win here from the rough. Will also hope for calm conditions.
Xander Schauffele (22/1)
The American won The Open and US PGA two years ago and then struggled with form and fitness in 2025 but there have been signs that he is finding his best form once again at the right time.
Robert MacIntyre (30/1)
The Scot is a world-class golfer who loves playing links golf and will probably be saying a silent prayer for some serious wind. Has a wonderful short game but questions remain about his temperament.
