Would Tiger Woods be a good Ryder Cup captain?

Luke Donald was recently announced as the captain for Team Europe in the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor, where he will be looking to extend his victorious streak. However, one of golf’s all-time greats could be standing in his way.

Tiger Woods is very comfortably placed in the best golfer of all time argument, with many believing he is the greatest ever. He holds all kinds of golfing records, and he is in one of the elitest of elite groups, having completed the career grand slam. Captaining Team USA to a Ryder Cup victory on European soil would truly put the cherry on top of the cake that is his prestigious career. But is he capable of it?

Tiger's 2019 Presidents Cup Captaincy

Tiger Woods Presidents Cup

The first thing to take note of is his time as captain for the Presidents Cup in 2019. Woods became the first captain to play, as well as captain, since Hale Irwin in 1994. Woods’ USA team came away from Melbourne with a 16-14 victory. This captaincy experience is a real strong point on Tiger’s CV for the role. He knows how to operate as captain, and he knows how to get his guys going.

Tiger Would Command Instant Respect

Tiger Woods Ryder Cup Captain

In a room full of the best golfers in the world, including young stars with arrogance, Ryder Cup veterans with bags of experience, and multiple major champions, one man's head will stand above the rest. That is the head of Tiger Woods. His golfing career commands respect, and it proves his authority. There is no golfer in the world at the moment that can ignore the requests of Tiger Woods. No matter where you sit in the world rankings, or if you're the newest owner of a green jacket, Tiger Woods has done it before you. His golfing achievements have earned him the opportunity to take the reins of Team USA, and these achievements generate respect for him before he has even picked the team.

Would Be a Bold Choice Away From Home

The away Ryder Cup, as Rory McIlroy himself said, is one of the hardest things to win in golf. It requires mental toughness and desire like nothing else. Times will get tough playing away from home, and it's in these tough times, the USA players will be looking to their leader. Your leader needs to be able to hold themselves above the rest, take accountability and be a boulder for the team to lean on. This is Tiger. I strongly believe he is one of the strongest characters in golf, and he has never hidden away when things have got tough. Another reason why he could be the perfect Ryder Cup captain.

What Could Stop Tiger Taking The Job?

Tiger's current injury and playing status could definitely play a role in whether he would accept the position or not. Just recently he said that he has not yet ruled himself out of playing in the Masters. I believe it is unlikely that we will see Tiger at Augusta this year, but it is clear he is still intending on playing on the PGA Tour. Tiger turned down the captaincy role for 2025, but it was turned down with an open mindset of receiving the role further down the line. Tiger passed on the role due to his concerns over time commitments and responsibilities to the PGA Tour board. If Tiger feels that the time is right for him to take on the momentous role, then I am sure we will see him at Adare Manor in 2027.

Is Tiger's Ryder Cup Record a Concern?

Tiger has been a part of Team USA for eight Ryder Cups as a player, seven of which were losses. Of the 37 matches he played in, he only won 13, with 21 losses and three ties. A slightly underwhelming individual record considering his overall golfing career. Is it fair to base his ability as a captain on his playing record?

Taking a look at former USA captains, Keegan Bradley played in seven matches, winning four and losing three. Zach Johnson played in 17 matches, with eight wins, seven losses and two ties. As we know, both of these captains were unsuccessful against the Europeans. Luke Donald played in 15 matches, winning ten of those, losing four and halving one. It makes sense that Luke Donald is as successful a captain as he is, looking at all the Ryder Cup success he saw as a player. But I don't think playing records mean everything. There is a lot more that goes into it, the players themselves and how they perform, the players your facing, how teams handle the pressure away from home, the list goes on. It would be harsh to rule Tiger Woods out just from seeing his playing record in the Ryder Cup

The 2027 Ryder Cup is going to be a massive task for Team USA, but we know how desperate they are going to be to get themselves back to winning ways. From his playing career alone, I think Tiger Woods would make an exceptional captain. The respect he commands and the aura he holds would be a massive boost to the USA players. But is he better off waiting a few years to accept the role when the time is more fitting? We will soon find out, but whoever does take on the role as captain for 2027, they’ve got a big job on their hands.
