Patrick Reed continued his remarkable start to life on the DP World Tour, winning the Qatar Masters for his second victory in three starts. And he only lost out at the Bahrain Championship in a playoff.

The former Masters champion now has a comfortable lead in the Race to Dubai and continues his rise up the world rankings, vindicating his decision to quit LIV Golf. He finished with a final round of 70 for a 72-hole total of 272, two ahead of Scotland’s Calum Hill, who also missed out in the payoff at Bahrain. Hill finished the week with a 67.

Reed is already certain to secure one of the 10 PGA Tour cards on offer at the end of the season. He was always going to be heading back across the Atlantic but securing his card via the Race to Dubai will give him improved status for next season.

He said: "We couldn't ask for anything more than what we did. I felt like the game was really solid and, you know, I knew I loved Dubai. I've played there before. I've played well there.

"And so to get the first win there and then really to have a chance there last week and unfortunate not to be able to close it off, but then to come in this week and close it off, especially, you know, we had a lot of adversity today. But to be able to flip that switch and play bogey free here on the back nine was special."

Reed began the day with a two-shot lead but he surrendered it with a poor front nine, reaching the turn in one-over par after dropping strokes at the second and sixth. But he took control with birdies at the 10th and 11th and stretched his lead to three with another birdie at the 14th.

Hill looked out of contention at the turn, but made a charge on the back nine. He eagled the par-five 10th then made four birdies in a row from the 14th. But it was not enough to trouble Reed, who rattled off four successive pars down the stretch for a stress-free win.

In 2012 he finished tied 22nd at the PGA Tour qualifying school, earning his card for 2013. Later that year he won the Wyndham Championship for his maiden PGA Tour success.

At the 2014 Humana Challenge he set the PGA Tour record for most strokes under par after 54 holes. His rounds of 63-63-63, were 27-under-par. It was the first time in PGA Tour history that a player opened a tournament with three rounds of 63 or better. He won the tournament by two strokes over Ryan Palmer.

On March 9, Reed won the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral, earning $1.5m to become only the fifth golfer to earn three PGA Tour wins before his 24th birthday since 1990. He remains the youngest winner of a WGC event, and the victory also moved him to 20th in the world rankings.

On January 12, 2014, Reed won his fourth PGA Tour title at the Tournament of Champions. He became just the fourth player in the last two decades to win four times on the PGA Tour before his 25th birthday, the other three were Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia.
