Why I am switching to a mini driver in 2026
Things are looking up!
After last week's update, I’m afraid (and frustrated) to say that as of the 12th January, I still haven’t stepped foot on a golf course in 2026. But that SHOULD all change this week.
What I have been doing is hitting a LOT of balls still and for those that might care, I am happy to say that I have finally got my swing (irons only, driver still work in progress) looking as good as it has ever looked. In fact, and I quote my coach Sam Forgan, "this is the best I’ve seen you swing it, ever probably", so at least something positive is happening and I am seeing the fruits of my hard work.
I do also have some golf booked in, Friday this week I'm heading to my second home of Felixstowe Ferry - Highly Recommended on Golfshake by the way - to finally make my first birdies of 2026 - hopefully!
I have been keeping a keen eye on the Golfshake YouTube channel this week as we are in peak release season. I have to admit, what I have seen so far from Mizuno and TaylorMade looks fairly impressive and I’m sure there is more to come this week. In fact, I know there is more to come this week as some of the stuff coming out I have already hit...
And that leads me nicely onto something else that is happening this week. It's fitting time.
This is Why I'm Switching to a Mini Driver in 2026

By the time this is published, you may have already seen the new Cobra KING TEK Mini Driver that has just been released. This is something I’m really excited to get in my bag for 2026. I have hit the club on a launch event back in November at Hillside Golf Club, and I was also lucky enough to take it out onto the golf course that day and it's incredibly easy to hit, both off the tee and the deck.
Having turned into a bit of a weak 3-wood player last year, I am going to drop that club from the bag in place of the mini driver. So the top of my bag will go driver at 9 degrees, mini driver at 13.5 degrees, and then straight into my driving/3 iron.
On Tuesday I am going for my fitting up at AF Golf in Yaxley, Peterborough. The plan is to get the new Cobra driver (not yet revealed), the mini driver, and look at some new irons for the year too. I’m leaning towards the new Cobra 3DP Tour model as I have hit them and love the fact I can get more height from the longer irons without sacrificing any distance due to the weight distribution advantages of the 3D printing.
So all in all, it's not a bad week coming up, and it's 50 days until eight of us head to Spain to celebrate a rather big birthday of mine. Not that I am counting down the days or anything.
I hope those reading this have managed to get some golf in this year, but if not, hang in there. It won't be long now!
