Just a week after missing the cut at the American Express, England’s Justin Rose stormed to an extraordinary seven-shot victory at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

The Englishman claimed his 13th PGA Tour title in style in San Diego with one of the best performances of his career - his 265, 23-under par, total is a tournament record.

Having led by six shots heading into the final round, Rose carded a two-under par 70 to finish off a week that started in blistering fashion with a 10-under round of 62 to recapture the crown he won in 2019 with a score of 21 under par.

The 45-year-old, who moved to third in the early FedExCup Standings, also almost equalled the previous largest margin of victory for a winner of the tournament, with his seven-shot margin just one shy of the eight shots seven-time champion Tiger Woods beat Ryuji Imada by in 2008.

"This has been a huge win and to start the season with a win is amazing," said Rose. "I knew 23 under was a record. I've grown the lead each day so I wanted to finish seven ahead rather than six.

"I had my own little mini goals down the stretch which kept me focused, which was key and I managed my game well. I'm still loving it and working hard and do believe there is some good stuff ahead of me."

Brooks Koepka, playing in his first PGA Tour event since returning from LIV Golf - finished in a tie for 56th place, shooting a 70 on Sunday to finish on four under overall.

Who is Justin Rose?

Rose was born on July 30, 1980 in Johannesburg but grew up in England. He first came to prominence when he pre-qualified as an amateur for the 1998 Open at Royal Birkdale. There, he holed a dramatic shot from the rough at the final hole to finish in a tie for fourth place. Soon afterwards, aged 18, he turned professional and missed his first 21 cuts.

He earned his first European Tour card when he finished fourth at qualifying school in 1999. The following season he failed to retain his card and had to revisit the qualifying school, where he finished ninth.

In 2001 he opened the season with consecutive second-place finishes in the country of his birth, South Africa. He went on to finish the year in the top 40 on the Order of Merit. He won his first professional event, the Dunhill Championship in South Africa, in 2002, and followed this up with three further victories that year.

In 2003, Rose reached number 33 in the world rankings and earned enough money to claim his PGA Tour card as a non-member for 2004. In 2004, he played mostly in America on the PGA Tour, while also maintaining his membership on the European Tour. He slipped out of the top 50 in the world rankings but kept his tour card after earning in excess of $1m.

In November 2006 he won the Australian Masters to claim his first title for four years. He also enjoyed a top-five finish at The Masters in 2007 and reached 26 in the world rankings.

Rose won the European Tour Order of Merit title in 2007 after claiming the Volvo Masters.

His first success on the PGA Tour came at the Memorial Tournament in 2010 and he has since gone on to win 13 times on the PGA Tour, the most by any English golfer.

His crowning glory came when he won the US Open in 2013. He has also won 11 times on the DP World Tour and in 2016 won the gold medal at the Olympic Games. He has won two WGC events and represented Europe in the Ryder Cup on six occasions.

Rose is a former world number one who had slipped to 71st in the rankings and 77th in the FedEx Cup standings before winning the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in 2023.

In April he finished level with Rory McIlroy after 72 holes at The Masters before losing in a playoff. He also finished fifth at the Scottish Open. And in August last year he won the FedEx St Jude, the first of the season’s FedEx Cup playoff events.

He would go on to star for Europe as they beat the USA in the Ryder Cup at Bethpage.

This was his 13th win on the PGA Tour. It was his 447th start and he has made 348 cuts. Apart from his 13 victories, he has been second 17 times, third 15 times, in the top five on 73 occasions and in the top 10 on 117 occasions. He has PGA Tour career earnings of more than $75m.
