JJ Spaun What's In The Bag 2025
American JJ Spaun was the last man standing, holing a monstrous putt on the final green to win the US Open at Oakmont by two shots from Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre. And that putt meant he was the only man in the field to break par.
The final round of the year’s third major was utter carnage, with the lead changing hands multiple times as player after player found the challenge too much on a day that featured a weather delay and saturated fairways as the rain continued to tumble down.
Sam Burns, Viktor Hovland, Adam Scott, Tyrrell Hatton, Carlos Ortiz, Spaun and MacIntyre all either led or shared the lead at some point but one by one they all fell away until only MacIntyre and Spaun were left.

The Scot shot a magnificent final round of 68 to set a clubhouse target of one over par and then had to wait and see if he had done enough. And when Spaun hit his approach at the 72nd hole to 65 feet there was every chance of him three-putting and joining MacIntyre in a playoff. Instead, the man who lost the Players Championship to Rory McIlroy in a playoff earlier in the year, slammed the door shut by holing the putt.
MacIntyre, watching on TV, applauded and mouthed "wow" when the putt dropped.
Spaun said: "I don't think I did keep my composure with all the bad breaks I was getting [on the front nine]. I just tried to dig deep, hit some good shots. The weather delay we had just changed the whole vibe for the day. I leaned on the experience of a delay at The Players, and I kept pushing. I bounced back and fought really hard on the back nine.
"I never thought I would be here holding this trophy. I've obviously had aspirations and dreams but I never knew what my ceiling was, never knew how good I could be. I'm just proud I've been resilient in my career and have pushed through a lot of things. I'm just trying to be the best golfer I can be."
Who is JJ Spaun?
Spaun was born in Los Angeles, California, on August 21, 1990.
Spaun's mother was an avid golfer and received a doctor's permission to continue playing golf while carrying him until she was eight months pregnant. Spaun received a plastic set of golf clubs when he was three years old, and practiced from a young age by hitting balls into a net his father had set up in their garage.
He played collegiate golf for the San Diego State Aztecs and went to San Diego State University. Spaun majored in social science at San Diego State, and turned professional in 2012. His total of five individual collegiate wins tied the Aztecs record set by Lennie Clements.
He played his first three professional seasons on the PGA Tour of Canada, finishing 35th in 2013. After missing six of seven cuts in 2014, he went to PGA Tour Canada Q School, where he finished T8.
Spaun had his first professional win at the 2015 Staal Foundation Open. It took him inside the top three on the PGA Tour Canada Order of Merit, earning entry into the 2015 Canadian Open.
With two events remaining in the 2015 season, he broke the record in PGA Tour Canada single-season earnings. He made the cut in the 11 events he played, which included a tour-record four consecutive top-five finishes and six consecutive top-10s. Spaun finished as the PGA Tour Canada Order of Merit winner, which made him fully exempt on the Web.com Tour for 2016. He also played in the PGA Tour’s Northern Trust Open in February 2016 where he missed the cut. Later that year, Spaun won his first event on the Web.com Tour, at the News Sentinel Open. He shot a tournament record 26-under 258 to beat Sam Ryder by one stroke. The win came on August 21, 2016, his 26th birthday, and ensured his promotion to the PGA Tour the following year.
Spaun maintained his status on the PGA Tour until 2021, when he dropped outside the top 500 in the world rankings and lost his PGA Tour card. He regained his playing privileges through the Korn Ferry Tour Finals by finishing second at the Boise Open in August 2021. He earned his first PGA Tour win at the Texas Open in April 2022, after 147 PGA Tour starts.
At the Players Championship Spaun held the solo-lead after 54 holes. He shot an even-par 72 in the final round to tie the score of 12-under set by 2019 champion Rory McIlroy and entered a three-hole aggregate playoff, which was held the following day. In the playoff, Spaun hit his tee shot at the par-3 island green 17th into the water and made triple bogey. McIlroy won with an aggregate score of +1. Spaun's runner-up finish moved him to a career-high 25th in the Official World Golf Ranking.
He has enjoyed a wonderful season. He finished tied third at the Sony Open, tied second at the Cognizant and tied sixth at the Charles Schwab Challenge.
This was his 236th start and his second win, to go along with three runner-up finishes, five thirds and 11 top fives. He has made 150 starts. The win takes him to eighth in the world rankings and sixth in the FedEx Cup standings. He has earned $9.6m in prize money this season.
