Peter Malnati Player Profile And What's In The Bag
Peter Malnati ended a near nine-year wait for his second PGA Tour title as he won the Valspar Championship, securing a place at The Masters in the process.
He made five birdies as he quickly caught and overtook 54-leader Keith Mitchell, who had a day to forget.
Malnati began the day two off the lead before shooting a 4-under 67 in his final round at Innisbrook Resort's Copperhead Course. On the tee at the 198-yard, par-3 17th hole, he hit his tee shot to within six feet of the cup and walked in the ensuing putt for birdie.
It helped Malnati finish the week on 12-under 272. He beat Cameron Young by two strokes after Young bogeyed his final hole en route to a 68. It means that the American’s increasingly frustrating wait for a maiden win continues.
Chandler Phillips and Canada's Mackenzie Hughes tied for third at 9 under.
Xander Schauffele tied the low round of the day with a 6-under 65 that featured an eagle and four birdies over his final eight holes; Schauffele tied for fifth at 8 under with Ryan Moore, China's Carl Yuan and Canada's Adam Hadwin.
Player Profile
Peter Malnati was born on June 13, 1987 in New Castle, Indiana.
Hw played on mini-tours until earning special temporary membership on the Web.com Tour in 2013. He won his seventh tournament of the 2013 season at the News Sentinel Open, finished 18th on the regular-season money list and earned his PGA Tour card for 2014.
In 2014, Malnati finished 178th in the FedEx Cup points list on the PGA Tour, losing his card. He failed to regain his card at the Web.com Tour Finals and returned to the Web.com Tour for the 2015 season, earning his second win at the Brasil Champions on the way to finishing fourth on the regular-season money list and regaining his PGA Tour card for the following season.
In November 2015, Malnati earned his maiden PGA Tour victory by winning the Sanderson Farms Championship, beating William McGirt and David Toms by a shot after a Monday finish to the tournament. He shot a five-under round of 67 to come from one behind to take the victory over a crowded leaderboard. The win earned Malnati an exemption on the PGA Tour through the end of the 2018 season.
The win at the Valspar is just his second on the PGA Tour.
He has made 259 starts and made 126 cuts, with two wins, one runner-up, four top fives and 12 top 10s. His career earnings stand at $10.5m. The win took him to 16th place in the FedEx Cup standings.
