Mizuno Launches New ST MAX Driver, Fairway Wood & Hybrid

By: Golfshake Editor | Mon 22 Jan 2024

Mizuno has launched its new ST MAX driver, fairway wood and hybrid, all of which will become available from February 2024, serving as the ultra-stable members of the manufacturer's acclaimed ST-230 series.

Last year, a jump in ball speed from Mizuno’s CORTECH Chamber saw Keith Mitchell and his ST-Z lead the 2023 PGA Tour season Total Driving Statistic through the Fed Ex playoffs. Mizuno’s next generation of talent, including Bailey Tardy (ST-Z / LPGA rookie) and Marco Penge (ST-X /Challenge Tour winner) also impressed with their ST-230 series drivers.

Now, the ST-MAX 230 driver, fairway and hybrid pack all that performance into a stable, large footprint profiles. Engineered to deliver predictable straight flights, over and over from the widest range of off centre strikes.

Mizuno Golf's Chris Voshall said: “Everything in the ST MAX engineering is dedicated to producing a straight ball flight, with minimal speed drop offs across the face. One of the regular comments we heard in tour testing was that the heads felt like they were on tracks.”

ST-MAX 230 Driver

ST MAX 230 Driver

A low profile, wide footprint driver that looks noticeably larger than its measured 460cc. An expanded CORTECH Chamber and 54 grams of back weighting combine to create Mizuno’s most stable ever driver, with exceptional straight-line performance across its wide, inviting clubface.

The ST MAX 230 driver unveils two new engineering enhancements to ensure that stability is backed with impressive ball speeds - a next generation CORTECH Chamber and new Bet rich LFS Ti clubface.

Delivering an impressive ball flight that stays on whatever line you set it.

Chris added: “The goal of the ST-MAX project was to engineer the greatest MOI and performance from off centre strikes conceivable - but not sacrifice ball speed or make the profile too cumbersome to look at.”

  • MAX Stability: Wide profile, massive 54g back weighting and 40% larger graphite composite for extreme twist resistance to off centre strikes and a straight, predictable ball flight.
  • Expanded CORTECH CHAMBER: A dense stainless steel weight with elastomeric TPU - taking stress from the clubface and creating an additional energy source. Lengthened in the ST MAX and shifted closer to the clubface to maintain ball speeds across a wider portion of the clubface.
  • New Beta Rich Ti LFS: A new lighter, faster face material - measuring 9% higher in tensile strength (compared to SAT2041) for a complex multi-thickness face geometry. First introduced on Mizuno’s 2024 Tour driver the ST-G 440cc.
  • Longer 45 ¾ inch shaft for faster clubhead speeds: Possible through the additional stability and off centre performance of the ST MAX head.
  • Quick Switch Hosel: 4 degrees of adjustability.
  • RH - 9.5, 10.5 12 / LH - 9.5

ST-MAX 230 Fairway Wood

A larger footprint, wide profile fairway wood - engineered to deliver absolute straight line performance from across the clubface.

A high energy MAS1C steel face is enhanced by an expanded CORTECH Chamber, shifted closer to the clubface to increase both centre and off centre ball speeds. A speed bevel applied to the leading edge ensures that performance is equally impressive from tee and turf.

A wrap around toe composite completes weighting improvements with the collective aim of delivering an impressively straight, predictable ball flight.

Chris said: “The ST Max stands alone as a high MOI design - we’ve had genuine curiosity from our tour staff. A consequence of making sure the profile still looks good over the ball and the speed is there. Without retaining the other performance traits of a great fairway wood an extra few point on the MOI scale means very little.”

  • MAX Stability: Wide profile, large footprint with wrap around toe composite for extreme twist resistance to off centre strikes and a straight, predictable ball flight.
  • Speed Bevel: A modification to the leading edge ensures cleaner turf interaction and speed retained on strikes direct from turf.
  • High energy MAS1C steel face: Incorporating Mizuno’s multi-thickness design for quick ball speeds across the face, while maintaining strength and durability.
  • Quick Switch Hosel: 4 degrees of adjustability.
  • RH - 15, 18, 21
  • LH - 15, 18

ST-MAX 230 Hybrid

A large footprint, lower profile hybrid - engineered to deliver absolute straight line performance from across the clubface.

A high energy MAS1C steel face is enhanced by an expanded CORTECH Chamber, shifted closer to the clubface to increase both centre and off centre ball speeds.  A speed bevel applied to the leading edge ensures that performance is equally impressive from tee and turf.

Weight located low and deep and an ultra-lightweight waffle crown combine to deliver an impressively straight, predictable ball flight.

Chris commented: “The ST MAX fairway and hybrid feel like they’re on tracks through impact.  The heads are so stable that it’s actually very hard to work the ball if that’s your game. But if a high straight flight is ok - these are almost like cheating!"

  • MAX Stability: Lower profile, large footprint with ultra-light waffle crown and weight located deep to produce a high, straight, predictable ball flight.
  • Speed Bevel: A modification to the leading edge ensures cleaner turf interaction and speed retained on strikes direct from turf.
  • High energy MAS1C steel face: Delivers quick ball speeds across the face.
  • Quick Switch Hosel: 4 degrees of adjustability.
  • RH - 19, 22, 25, 28
  • LH - 22, 25
