Mizuno Launches New Pro Irons For 2024

It's always an exciting day in the world of golf when Mizuno reveals its latest creation - and anticipation is high following the unveiling of the new Pro 241/243/245 Irons that have been the result of a celebrated connection between the revered manufacturer's club engineers and its Grain Flow Forging plant in Hiroshima, Japan.

David Llewellyn, Director of R&D, said: "Other manufacturers have widely adopted Mizuno's work to elevate the performance of elite player's irons. What now sets Mizuno apart is the ability to apply precise manufacturing techniques learned at our long-standing forging plant in Hiroshima, Japan, to increasingly complex designs.”

Mizuno Pro 241

The Mizuno Pro 241 is a pure shot-makers muscle-back with mass accumulated centrally behind impact.

David said: "With a muscle-back, the gains are in the details. The key to a visually appealing top-line might be a fraction of a millimetre, which can be lost or created in manufacturing. Working hand in hand with our forging plant for so many years allowed us to be incredibly precise in the engineering and craftsman's stages of the Mizuno Pro 241."

Mizuno Pro 243

The Mizuno Pro 243 is more compact and precise than its predecessor, yet faster from the face and more satisfying at impact.

David commented: “The Mizuno Pro 243 is the model that’s advanced the most, mainly due to evolution on the manufacturing side. It’s one thing for the R&D team to design a thinner face iron with stronger materials in the CAD world - but something else to have it Grain Flow Forged to those specifications and strength requirements.”

Chris said: “The Mizuno Pro 243 looks much more compact than its predecessor, even though the performance has stepped up. The long and mid irons are flying far enough, that we’ve had to modernise the lofts in the scoring irons. Mizuno Pro isn’t stuck in tradition - we’re led by performance above what might be expected historically.”

Mizuno Pro 245

The Mizuno Pro 245 is measurably quicker again from the face than the Mizuno Pro 243 but also easier to launch - due to a complex hollow body construction and internally suspended Tungsten weight.

David said: “There’s so much to the Mizuno Pro 245 for an iron of its size and shape. A multi-piece Grain Flow Forged Chromoly construction, suspended Tungsten weight and multi-thickness face. Impossible without Mizuno evolving its Grain Flow Forging process in Hiroshima. It takes a depth of manufacturing experience to push the envelope this far.”

• Grain Flow Forged in Hiroshima, Japan: At Mizuno’s exclusive facility where Mizuno irons have been produced since 1968.
• Hollow body GFF 4135 Chromoly face and neck (2-8 iron): With multi-thickness face configuration and laser welded 431 Stainless steel back piece for elevated ball speeds and launch.  
• Internal Tungsten Weighting (2-7): A 46g Tungsten weight is key to delivering improved launch, but is suspended to enable the sole to flex (key to faster ball speeds).

Chris added: “There are some impressive ball speed gains in the Mizuno Pro 245, considering we’ve slimmed it down - especially in the longer irons. The biggest challenge for people now is telling this iron apart from the one piece Mizuno Pro 241 muscle-back.”

Mizuno Pro Fli-Hi

The Mizuno Pro Fli-Hi has become a fixture with the majority of Mizuno’s tour players. An easy launching, powerful long iron replacement that flows seamlessly into either the Mizuno Pro 241, 243 or 245 full iron set.

David commented: “Hybrid type irons generally use a flat sheet metal for the face - but upgrading to a heat treated 4335+ Nickel Chromoloy, allowed us to incorporate a faster multi-thickness face and off-set face weld.”

• Nickel Chromoly 4335+ Hollow Body Construction: Utilising a heat-treated multi-thickness face for elevated average ball speeds, with a more pliable body and bendable hosel.
• Internal Tungsten Weighting: 23 grams of weight low in the head for elevated launch compared to traditional long irons.
• Offset face weld: Placing the weld line inside the upper face-gauge allowed a thinner topline. On the bottom edge, the weld line is back from the face, allowing greater flex and ball speeds from low on the face.
• Harmonic Impact Technology: Applied to best match the vibration patterns Mizuno’s tour players identified with a soft muscle-back feel.
• Increased bounce angle: Increased by a degree for improved turf interaction.
• Black Ion Finish: Fully blacked-out plating creates the illusion of a more compact profile.

Chris said: “The Fli-Hi has become a fixture on tour - not just with Mizuno’s contracted players. The new version is a little slimmer but does everything the original did, just better. It flights a little higher and goes further. All obvious improvements - just difficult to make.”
