Alexa Pano Player Profile And What's In The Bag

By: | Mon 21 Aug 2023

ALEXA PANO secured her maiden victory on the LPGA Tour when she won the women’s event at the ISPS Handa World Invitational in dramatic circumstances - on her 19th birthday!

Pano won a dramatic play-off, as Gabriella Cowley narrowly missed out after forcing her way into extra holes.

Cowley produced an eagle-birdie finish to card a final-round 70 and move to eight under alongside Esther Henseleit and Pano, who birdied her final two holes to card a six-under 66.

The players returned to the 18th for a play-off, where Henseleit was eliminated with a par as her two playing partners made birdie, while Cowley appeared to have the advantage on the second play-off hole when Pano was forced to pitch out from the trees.

Cowley three-putted from long range, including a squandered birdie look from inside four feet, to match Pano's par, before the American sealed victory with a two-putt birdie on the next play-off hole.

"It feels so surreal that it's happened. I can't actually process that," said a shocked-looking Pano, whose caddie this week was her father Rick.

Standing on the 13th tee, US Solheim Cup player Ryann O'Toole looked in control of the tournament as she led by three shot on nine under.

However, the 2021 Scottish Open champion double bogeyed the 13th to suddenly drop into the joint lead after Pano had birdied the 14th to also move to seven under.

Pano recovered from a dropped shot at the 16th to birdie the closing two holes with O'Toole appearing out of contention after suffering three-putt bogeys on the 15th and 17th - either side of a holing a long birdie on 16.

But she created an eight-foot eagle chance at the last which would have ensured a four-women play-off had she holed it.

O'Toole finished a stroke back in fourth ahead of Olivia Cowan, while pre-tournament favourites Georgia Hall and Leona Maguire both finished in a share of 16th.

Player Profile

Alexa Pano was born in Westborough, Massachusetts on August 20, 2004.

She featured in the documentary The Short Game when she was just seven. Pano was the first three-time national finalist in the Drive, Chip and Putt competition. Pano was the youngest golfer to play in an LPGA of Japan Tour event when she played the 2016 Yonex Ladies Open at the age of 11 and competed on the LPGA Tour when she was 13. She played in the US Women’s Open as an amateur in 2019 and helped the USA to win the Junior Solheim Cup the same year.

She turned professional in April 2022 and earned status on the Epson Tour by finishing tied 10th at qualifying school. She earned her LPGA Tour card through qualifying school at the end of 2022.
