A Golf Course That Punches Well above Its Weight Class

I'll admit it, when I told a few golf buddies I was heading to Medina County, Ohio, for a three-course swing, I got some blank stares. Medina County doesn't have the name recognition of Bandon or Pinehurst, and it never will. But that's exactly why I love finding trips like this one. Tucked into the rolling farmland and hardwood forests southwest of Cleveland, Medina County turned out to be one of those quietly excellent golf destinations that rewards the traveler willing to get off the beaten path: three genuinely different golf courses, all within a short drive of each other, none of them pretending to be something they're not.
I set up camp at the Garner Hotel, 5 Park Centre Drive in Wadsworth, which put me within easy striking distance of all three stops on my itinerary. It's a comfortable, no-fuss base, exactly what you want on a golf trip where the point is to be out the door early and back late, tired and happy. And it didn't hurt that the hotel sits close to Galaxy Restaurant, which became something of a nightly habit. Their gyro salad is the real deal: big, fresh, loaded with flavor, and precisely what you want after playing 18 holes in the summer heat. On my one night off from Galaxy, I treated myself to Thyme2, an upscale spot with an eclectic feel that surprised me. The mocktails alone are worth the visit if you're pacing yourself on a multi-day golf trip, and the seafood entrees were some of the best I've had in this part of Ohio. They are also known for world-class hamburgers!
My first round was at Ironwood Golf Club in Hinckley, owned and operated by Cleveland Metroparks. Ironwood is a traditional parkland design that first opened in 1967, laid out by Harold Paddock across sloping terrain that winds through hardwood forests, past lakes and rivers, and through the occasional gorge, with contoured greens that keep you honest all day. From the Black tees, Ironwood plays 6,401 yards to a course rating of 72.1 and a slope of 125, plenty of golf course for most of us. I found the Blue tees at 6,121 yards (71.1/123) to offer a fitting challenge.
It's easy to see why Ironwood has become one of the most popular public courses in the area. The turf conditions were consistent from tee to green, the scenery never let up, and the greens fees are the kind of affordable that makes you want to book a same-day rematch. The layout is Ironwood's calling card: elevation changes, wooded par 3s that demand a real swing, valley holes that play tricks with depth perception, and a handful of risk-reward decisions that had me second-guessing my driver more than once. The third hole is a standout, a par 4 dogleg right playing downhill from an elevated tee box, and it sets the tone early for what's a fun, scenic round.
From Ironwood, I made the short drive to Ridge Top Golf Course in Medina, a public 18-hole, par-71 layout that's been welcoming golfers since 1961. Bob Pennington designed Ridge Top, and reviews consistently single out the same things I noticed myself: scenic elevation changes, a genuinely friendly staff, strong value, and greens that were fast and true all day. From the Blue tees, Ridge Top plays 6,241 yards at a 69.9 rating and 116 slope. I found the White tees at 5,893 yards (68.2/111) to offer a good challenge and still let me leave with a little dignity.

Ridge Top saves its best for last. The 18th is the signature hole, a short 122-yard par 3 that plays a dramatic 80 feet downhill from tee to green. It's a genuine confidence-tester to close the round; the green has some mild undulation to work with, but anything short is simply gone, swallowed by the hillside. Standing on that tee with the green so far below me, I couldn't help but laugh at how such a short hole could get my heart rate up that much.

My third and final stop was Shale Creek Golf Club, built on land that spent a century as the Gunkelman Farm before it became one of the more interesting golf properties I've played in Ohio. Nestled into a quiet residential community, Shale Creek offers five sets of tees ranging from 5,006 all the way up to 7,026 yards, so there's a tee box here for every kind of golfer. The Gold tees play a serious 7,026 yards at a 71.6 rating and 130 slope, while I found the White tees at 5,913 yards (67.8/120) to offer a good challenge.

The rolling terrain at Shale Creek creates some genuinely tricky lies, and streams meander through the property before eventually cascading into the Rocky River, which comes directly into play from the 10th hole through the 15th. The greens are large and undulating, the fairways generously wide, and water has a dominant presence throughout, though the closing holes shift into more traditional Ohio terrain, wooded and gently rolling, even as the water hazards keep coming. It's a course that demands accuracy and makes you think your way around, but it never crosses into unfair territory for a beginner.

The signature hole is the 14th, a par 5 playing 504 yards from the White tees with the Rocky River running the entire length of the hole down the left side, which, as I quickly reminded my playing partners, is a far better miss than the right. Most players will play it as a three-shot hole, threading a narrow fairway with the only real trouble beyond the river being a single bunker on the left about 160 yards short of the green. That green itself is large with just modest undulation, which felt like a fair reward after three shots of managing the river.

Three courses, three completely different personalities, and not a wasted round among them. Their website, www.visitmedinacounty.com, lists 15 courses, the majority of which are accessible to the public. If you're looking for a Midwest golf trip that won't strain the wallet but will absolutely test your game, Medina County deserves a spot on your list. Book your stay at the Garner Hotel in Wadsworth, save room for a gyro salad at Galaxy and a seafood dinner at Thyme2, and give yourself three days to play Ironwood, Ridge Top, Shale Creek, or any of the other challenging golf courses. You'll leave with sore legs, a few new favorite holes, and, if you're smart about which tees you pick, a little bit of your dignity intact.
