Championship Golf on the Shores of a Tennessee Lake
There's a moment on the drive into Pickwick Landing State Park when the trees open up, and Pickwick Lake spreads out in front of you. Tucked into the southwest corner of Tennessee, where the state meets Mississippi and Alabama, Pickwick Landing has built a reputation as a water sportsman's paradise, but for my money, the golf course is the real headliner, and the lodging and dining that surround it make it an easy place to spend a few days.Pickwick Landing State Park Golf Course is a genuine 18-hole championship layout, and it plays every bit the part. From the back tees, it stretches to 6,483 yards against a par of 72, with a course rating of 71.1 and a slope of 123, numbers that tell you this course isn't a pushover. I found the White tees at 6,284 yards (70.4/120) offered a good challenge and still let me leave with a little dignity. The course has earned real recognition to back that up, landing at No. 2 on Golf Advisor's Best Public Golf Courses in Tennessee list in both 2023 and 2024.
Ask around, and most regulars will point you straight to the 2nd hole as the course's signature test. It's a tight, tree-lined par 4 playing 382 yards with a dogleg bending right, and out of bounds runs the entire length of the right side of the fairway. Every hole at Pickwick Landing is framed by trees, but the 2nd is where that identity really announces itself, forcing a precise tee shot right out of the gate rather than letting you ease into the round. Miss right and you're not just in trouble; you're reloading. It's the kind of hole that sets the tone for everything that follows: this course rewards shot-making over swinging hard, and the 2nd makes sure you know that on your second swing of the day.
Golf isn't the only draw here, either. This is a park built around water, with a full-service marina, dry storage, both wet and overnight slips, and three public boat ramps for boaters, anglers, and paddlers. If you want to stay closer to shore, there are miles of hiking trails, a disc golf course, tennis courts, and both indoor and outdoor pools. It's a rare golf destination where non-golfers in your group can fill an entire itinerary without ever feeling like an afterthought.
For lodging, I stayed at the Lodge at Pickwick Landing itself, an easy recommendation for golfers who want to be close to everything. The Lodge offers 119 newly renovated rooms plus five suites, most with a private balcony (first-floor rooms get a patio instead) looking straight out over Pickwick Lake. There's something about coming off eighteen holes in the Tennessee heat and stepping onto that balcony with a cold drink to watch the boats come in that makes the trip feel like a getaway rather than a road trip. If you'd rather spread out, the park also offers cabins. The standard cabins are a great option, each with a full kitchen, central heat and air, a private patio with an outdoor grill, cable TV, and a fireplace, with cookware and linens provided. A smaller number of premium cabins with two or three bedrooms suit larger groups. Whichever you choose, cabin guests get full access to the Lodge's amenities, including the tennis courts and both pools.
Wherever you stay, don't skip the Restaurant at Pickwick Landing, which underwent a full renovation in 2020 and now serves food that genuinely surprises people expecting standard state park fare. The shrimp and grits are a legitimate standout, the hand-cut steaks are cooked properly, and the kitchen runs a nightly steak special that keeps regulars coming back. Be sure to take advantage of the complimentary continental breakfast offered to lodge guests, a welcome touch before an early tee time that meant I never had to hunt down coffee off-property. Add in lake views through the dining room's glass walls, and you've got a restaurant that punches well above its weight for a state park property.
Between a genuinely challenging, well-regarded golf course, a comfortable Lodge with a view worth waking up for, and a restaurant that will legitimately surprise you, Pickwick Landing State Park has earned its spot on my short list of Tennessee golf destinations worth the drive.
