Entitled ignorant members; shocking pace of play!

Nice shortish course, mediocre facilities. Overall it’s in good condition with well kept greens. Front 9 parkland style, back 9 is undulating and has gorse traps if wayward. Not particularly scenic or challenging. Average overall.

May need a crash helmet as felt like on every hole someone was shouting “FORE” and slicing onto adjacent fairway.

Pace of play is horrendous, almost entirely played by retired 4 balls who will rarely wave faster players through. Near 5 hour round as a solo player. Clubhouse feels more like a dining room at a care home, not welcoming or friendly at all.

On course; was shouted at by members and spoken down to, just for asking if could walk to next hole. Will never play there again.

A Round of two halves

Newton Green is a course of two halves, what is now the bulk of the back 9 was established in 1907, designed by James Braid on a village green.

No par 5’s on the back 9, some testing par 4’s that play quite tight, the 12th hole is a dogleg right that will take driver off tee out of play for most. The 16th and 17th have dips and gorse so laying up may be the sensible play on these holes.

The front 9 1st, part of the original 9 holes, is another dogleg that can play longer than it suggests. The 2nd through 11th are a newer part of the course in a parkland style, some runs of trees either side of fairways will catch slicers and hookers.

There are 2 par 5’s on this newer part of the course, 3 par 3’s. The third is a dogleg par 4 that has bunker and tree traps. The 8th and 10th have water hazards that can collect balls for all but the longest hitters, laying up is the safe bet on these.

The fairways and greens are always in good order and drain well, year round golf is available for all but extreme British weather events. Seems to be sparing use of temporary greens and tees which is good.

Clubhouse is pleasant, good selection of drinks and food, the sausage rolls are great! Pro shop staff are friendly, knowledgeable and are a credit to the club.

Finally notes, there are two practice areas for chipping behind the clubhouse, a 150yd practice area and a couple of practice nets. Near the 1st tee there is a small putting green to get a feel for the pace of the greens before your round.

Changing rooms have showers and are in small but acceptable. There are no lockers though.

Do note there is no stud bar, golfers will ether have to change shoes in changing rooms / car or as some have done, leave shoes in hallway or outside and scoot into bar for a drink in socks.

Well worth a visit, when booking try to keep away from fourballs as pace of play can be a little slow when course is busy, but thats the same at most golf courses.

Excellent course/very freindly

Had a great day at Newton Green. Course was in beautiful condition. Loved the layout. Everybody I met, from Pro shop to course were extremely friendly and helpful. Layout is also fantastic. Will definitely go back, alll be it a bit of a trek from Chelmsford. Shame Ididnt play so well, and the 40mph winds didn't help.

My local course. Not very long in yardage. But the back nine is tight

Lovely course - two distinct nines that have their own charm

Thoroughly enjoyed my trip to the 'Top Village course in the UK'
Played on the Friday in the PM, reasonable twilight fees
Front 9 a nice Suffolk parkland course, decent hole design and fluidity. Back 9 threads through the village over public roads and is definitely one to play, very interesting hitting approach shots into greens with main roads behind!
Really enjoyed, good pace of play and reasonable fees
