What the club says: Carrickfergus stands on the shoreline of Belfast Lough with great views across to County Down. The club which was founded in 1926, is a pleasant parkland layout with a good mix of challenging and 'golfer friendly' holes. There are several long holes like the 6th to tempt the big hitters, but beware the infamous 'Dam' lurking. This same piece of water has caused some trepidation when driving off at the first hole.

Straight driving and course management are essential at Carrickfergus - with its imaginative use of water and sand the par of 68 is not matched that easily - the current course record stands at 64. Local golf architect David Jones has redesigned several holes with strong emphasis given to subtle greens built to USGA standards and liberal use of water features.

Narrow fairways on some holes make this short course more of a challenge than it would otherwise be. Unusual first hole playing over a deap water filed hole in the ground, that is really not in play for the competent golfer. According to the members, the fairways have in the past suffered from poor drainage and there was evidence of work being done to attempt to fix this issue, so a lot if sand on the ribbed fairways. Unfortunately, no buggies or trolleys available when we played, so bring your own trolley. Also bring a good appetite for the clubhouse food, you won't leave hungry.
