Many thousands of golfers travel to the Algarve each year to consume the wonderful climate and play the region's immaculately presented courses.

Since the golf tourism industry took off on Portugal's southern coast, numerous resorts have sprung up, with hotels attached to some of the finest layouts in Europe.

It's easy to see why the Algarve is so popular, but given the sheer number of destinations that you can experience, it could be a little overwhelming to know where exactly to start.

Whether you are a seasoned visitor to the area or are considering embarking on that journey for the first time, we believe that we may have found the perfect Algarve golf break.

Coming recommended by our travel partners Golfbreaks, we're excited to present to you a tremendous package, offering incredible value for money, that will see you stay at the superb Tivoli Lagos and play the visually spectacular Palmares, which is undeniably one of the finest designs in the vicinity.

Algarve Golf Break

Let's take a closer look at what you can expect from this break.

What You Need to Know About Tivoli Lagos

The historic, walled coastal town of Lagos is one of Portugal's gems, famed for its architecture, and the eponymous Tivoli hotel boasts an enviable location right in the heart of it.

It's a four-star venue that features 296 modern rooms, laid out across seven floors, which have all the amenities and facilities you could hope for. Renowned for the hospitable staff, Tivoli Lagos has so much for guests to enjoy, including a fitness centre, health club, and both an outdoor and indoor pool.

Your room will offer balcony or terraced views of the ocean, beaches, and beautiful city around you, which is distinctive for its cobblestone streets.

Tivoli Lagos

There are several restaurants to choose from here, including Pateo Velho and its quintessential Portuguese cuisine, and the soulful La Terrazza that has an authentic Italian menu. Armoma Bar & Lounge is the place for a drink and live music, it's bustling with the vibes, and Duna Beach is a special location where you can unwind.

The latter can be enjoyed courtesy of the free shuttle bus that will take you to the nearby Duna Beach Club, which has many activities for both adults and children across the white sands of the Meia Praia.

Given its central location, Tivoli Lagos is the perfect base from which to explore all the local attractions, and the marina, which provides you with so much to discover when you're not on the golf course.

Visitors who come here will often venture to the likes of Morgado, Alamos, Salgados, Pinta, Gramacho, Alto, and the classic Penina Championship for golf, but we're going to focus on the amazing Palmares, which is just a short journey up the coast.

Just How Good is Palmares Golf Course?

Palmares Golf

Having originally been created in the 1970s, the complete re-design of Palmares was born from the imagination of renowned course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr, with there being three loops of nine holes that each have their own personality and present varied characteristics to the golfer.

The Alvor section is celebrated for its tree-lined fairways and hillside views across a parkland style of layout, but that begins to transition during the Lagos part of the course, where lakes and scenic dunes come into play.

Praia will be the highlight for most golfers as you can take on coastal holes with ocean views and a dramatic landscape of dunes that make this a truly unforgettable stretch of golf.

Throughout your round, scenery across the Alvor Estuary and Meia Praia beach make this a visual treat.

Palmares Golf Course

Golfshake Ambassador Andy Picken had the opportunity to play here and he wrote in this review: "27 holes of excellent golf in three loops. Each differ in character and style. Awesome sea views linked with a natural setting that must have excited Robert Trent Jones Jr when he first viewed the canvas on which he was to create a memorable golfing experience. Sand scrapes and deep bunkers are well placed on all the loops. This is a golfing layout with the emphasis on fun."

Our Travel Editor Andy Waple is a veteran of these parts and he was similarly fulsome in his praise of Palmares: "The three loops have very distinctive features and as a result Palmares offers a great golfing experience. No matter which two of the three are selected, players are rewarded with equally impressive conditioning throughout, at least in my experience, from playing there a number of times over the years."

Now considered to be among the finest layouts on the continent, most tees at Palmares gaze out across the Atlantic, but the sheer enjoyment of the course means that it's not just special to look at.
