Moor Hall Golf Club Review

Moor Hall Golf Club was opened in 1932 and is set in the heart of Sutton Coldfield, just to the north east of Birmingham. It is easily accessible from the nearby M6 giving an easy route north and south.

Many come from further afield to the Midlands and you can see why given the quality of course and the friendly welcome from all associated.

What You Need to Know About Moor Hall Golf Club

Moor Hall Golf Club

Upon arrival you can see a very modern looking clubhouse with ample outside seating covered by a lively retractable canopy making it the ideal place to sit and chill after your round whilst watching others play the final hole.

There is a well stocked club shop with plenty of choice for any golfer wishing to make a small or larger purchase.

There is also a fantastic 'Performance Studio' with the latest Foresight Technology and GCQuad launch monitor. Cameron Clark, the Head Pro, has been there 22 years and is a well renowned professional with years of teaching experience whilst also spending a year with his European Tour card in 1998.

The club holds numerous open competitions for all golfers throughout the year which is always a great way to play the course.

Initially designed in 1932 by Hawtree &Taylor, this parkland course was totally redesigned in 2018 by McKenzie & Ebert.

Tom McKenzie's design meant every bunker was relocated and some great run-off areas were also added. This redevelopment was completed in 2020 to the tune of half a million pounds.

It is well renowned in the Midlands for being a very good and well presented course, with a great mix of holes, top greens  and tree lined.

Moor Hall Golf Club - The Course

The round starts with a lovely looking par 5 where accuracy (like most holes here) off the tee is more important than distance to keep the ball inside the tree lined fairway. Another feature of this hole, as in most others, are the well placed and immaculately maintained bunkers down the hole and green side. The green also brings its own challenge as it’s a great pace and very tricky.

Next up is the only par 3 on the front 9 but it’s a cracker. Slightly hitting up towards a green with bunkers waiting it’s a stunning hole stood on the tee. Just avoid the bunkers as finding one will make getting a par really tough.

You then have two great short par 4s where positioning off the tee is paramount if you want to find the green as trees line both holes and bunkers await on the 3rd fairway and both greens. Next up is a fantastic par 5 that looks stunning off the tee. A relatively straight hole with, guess what, bunkers all the way down and tree lined! Avoiding these two elements really are a necessity if you want to score well round here.

You are then met by the longest par 4 on the card, par here is a real bonus. The final three holes on the front 9 are all shorter par 4s and these all show how a hole doesn’t have to be very long to be a great and challenging test for all players.

The 7th is a relatively straight hole, yet 8 and 9 dogleg from left to right. The 9th is the first of three wonderful holes on the other side of the road. Right by the hotel/spa (no attachment with the golf club but still a wonderful looking building to have by the course).

The opening hole on the back 9 again isn’t long and doglegs to the left but can easily ruin your card - it looks so narrow off the tee and finding the fairway slightly to the right opens up your approach to a green like all others that is pretty big with a couple of bunkers if slightly off-line.

The 11th is an absolute gem of a par 3. Just a mid-iron to a tiered green with the backdrop of the hotel/spa behind and again great bunkering. All of this really frames the hole so well and makes it a stunner.

A mid length par 4 is next up after a short walk back over the road. Sweeping slightly to the right, it's another great hole, but that’s just the norm at Moor Hall.

The shortest hole on the course follows but don’t take it easy as bunkers protect a massive green for the length of the hole so getting the correct club is the order of the day here if you want to set up a birdie opportunity.

You then arrive at a real tough stretch of holes as three par 4s all over 400 yards await.

14 requires a drive over a ditch and the green sits round the corner to the right so left is best off the tee but that’s also the longest carry. 15 and 16 are both pretty straight holes, 15 being a bit tighter off the tee than 16. If you can come out of these three holes with 12-13 strokes you’ve played a blinder.

The penultimate hole and last of four great par 3s is a mid/long iron/hybrid to a green that sits over the ditch and again is an absolutely stunning golf hole.

The round comes to a close with another par 4 over 400 yards slightly elevated with the backdrop of the lovely looking clubhouse. Another large green sits at the end and a par here is a great result especially as you’ll probably have a fair few pairs of eyes watching you end your round.

Why You Should Play Moor Hall Golf Club

Moor Hall Golf Club

Moor Hall is a superbly designed course set in a stunning landscape, offering a brilliant variety of holes that prove a course doesn’t need to be long to be challenging. It’s a layout that caters to golfers of all abilities, who are sure to appreciate the thoughtful design and excellent playability.

The course is immaculately maintained, clearly reflecting the pride and dedication of the greenkeeping team. From the pristine tees and beautifully manicured fairways to some of the finest greens I’ve ever played on, Moor Hall delivers a truly top-class golfing experience. The approach areas are flawlessly prepared, and the run-offs around the greens are among the best I’ve seen.

The greens themselves are the ultimate test - fast, true, and full of subtle breaks, with barely a flat putt in sight. Scoring well here requires careful course management and strategic thinking throughout the round.

The recently redesigned bunkers are both visually striking and cleverly positioned, enhancing both the challenge and the aesthetic of each hole.

Moor Hall Golf Club

Our experience was made even better by the warm hospitality we received - from Head Pro, Cameron, to all the staff, especially Trish. We were incredibly well looked after, making our visit even more enjoyable.

In my view, Moor Hall is nothing short of golfing heaven. I can’t wait to return.

If anyone is looking for a great day of golf with all the trimmings, Moor Hall is the place to go. It really has it all and is one of, if not the friendliest course I’ve had the pleasure to review for Golfshake.
