Why You Should Play Golf at The K Club

By: Liam Moore | Thu 03 Mar 2022

Ireland has long been an idyllic location for the sport of golf, and the vast greenery found within the landscape supports that argument.

The country’s capital, Dublin, has attracted international visitors on an annual basis and when deciding where to play, The K Club is often at the summit of that list.

The venue proudly boasts two outstanding and awe-inspiring golf courses, tremendous accommodation choices, a luxurious spa and an excellent gastronomy service.

Before we detail the lavish experience of The K Club, let’s explore their history and how they carved the phenomenal reputation that is associated with the establishment today.

History

K Club

Historical records associated with the grounds date back to 1831, where Hugh Barton of the wine company Baron and Guestier purchased the land and built a house for him and his wife.

The construction work was completed in 1832 and today, it is used to form the east wing of the expansive resort.

The property remained under the ownership of the Barton family until 1949, which was followed by several different owners - including film director Kevin McClory.

In 1988, however, the estate was purchased by Jefferson Smurfit Group who transformed the land into The K Club, opening three years later.

In 2005, Gannon and Smurfit had private bids accepted for the venue after the aforementioned Jefferson Smurfit Group was sold to Madison Dearborn Partners.

As a result of the new ownership and influx of investment, The K Club is one of only four 5-red-star hotels to reside in Ireland.

Now for the main event, and visitors will have the choice of two exceptional golf courses, both designed by The King himself: Arnold Palmer.

We’ll start with the Palmer North Golf Course, but it’s important to note that the land attached to the premises is primarily flat, which needed Palmer’s creative brain to create two superb layouts.

Previously, this loop was known as the Ryder Cup Course, where The K Club played host to the 2006 edition of the prestigious competition.

For those who like a lengthy challenge, look no further than the Palmer North - which measures a whopping 7,350 yards from the tips.

If the distance intimidates you, fear not, as there are several alternative tee markings to accommodate an array of ability.

The River Liffey is a big piece of the course, as it meanders its way through and becoming a substantial feature for several holes.

Although undoubtedly challenging, there are moments where playing aggressive will return good fortune if executed correctly, which should appeal to the vast majority of golfers.

If you’re an ardent golfer and you potentially have your eye on the course record, then you may need to think again: Darren Clarke holds that title with a 12-under-par, 60.

The Palmer South Golf Course is the alternative track, and although it has not played host to the Ryder Cup, two European Opens have been held here - in 2004 and then returning in 2007.

Considering the course was only opened in 2003, it has built up quite the reputation that ultimately resulted in the hosting of two DP World Tour events.

Again, the furthest tees result in eye-watering distance - 7,300 yards - and this was also the longest on the DP World Tour for quite some time.

As previously noted, the land that Palmer had to work with was not ideal for golf terrain - and this is especially true for the Palmer South.

The American was forced to generate 200 acres of neutral farmland into the ultimate golfing experience, and whilst it might not reflect a traditional course, it does have lots of unique features - including drastic elevation changes.

If you’re looking to play a golf course that has hosted the world’s very best, then The K Club can offer you two.

Accommodation

The K Club

Considering the prestige surrounding the two layouts, it’s vitally important that The K Club can offer hospitality services to mirror the course’s quality - which is exactly what you’ll find at this Irish retreat.

With 140 bedrooms ready for domestic and international visitors alike, there’s plenty of room for large parties or even society tours.

Each room has been designed independently as opposed to one universal style, but every bedroom has one focal point: comfort.

Amenities include superior furnishing, sophisticated beds, a writing desk, and a sitting area to enjoy a quiet and peaceful nightcap.

Additionally, rooms are also equipped with satellite TV, free Wi-Fi, and a generous selection of bathroom products.

Gastronomy

K Club

With a facility as big as The K Club, there are plenty of eateries that are located on-site, all offering different dishes and atmospheres to suit your current mood.

The River Room Restaurant is ideal for morning fuel prior to your round and once you are finished, head to The Barton Restaurant for a classy evening.

The Henry Lounge provides a casual menu and quick bites, or you can trial and experiment European cuisine at the Legends Restaurant.

Finally, the K Thai restaurant specialises in Thai/south Asian dishes and the Straffan Inn is the optimal location to enjoy an iced cold beer.

Spa

Considering the size and popularity of this Irish resort, it should come as little surprise to understand just how impressive the on-site spa is.

Plentiful treatments are offered, and all conducted within the peaceful sanctuary of the quiet facility.

If you’re looking to stay on top of your fitness, then you’ll be delighted to know that the gym is well equipped and stacked with all the latest equipment.

The facility also includes a juice bar and a Pilates room, in addition to a sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and a large, indoor swimming pool.

The K Club continues to be at the forefront of Irish golf and with so many tremendous facilities attached to the premises, it’s clear to see why.

With two expertly constructed golf courses, an industry-leading spa, beautiful hotel rooms and amazing cuisine, a short or long break at The K Club is something every keen golfer should experience.
