La Manga Club Excellence Rewarded in Telegraph Ultratravel Awards

By: Golf Shake | Tue 08 Jul 2014

The five-star La Manga Club resort has strengthened its place at golf’s top table after receiving a leading accolade from one of the most prestigious travel awards in the UK.

The luxury venue in Murcia, south-east Spain, was shortlisted as one of only five esteemed venues for the ‘Best Golf Resort in the World’ at the 2014 Telegraph Ultratravel 100 Awards alongside Pebble Beach in California, St Andrews - the Home of Golf – Sandy Lane in Barbados and The Gleneagles Hotel – host of the 2014 Ryder Cup and the eventual winners.

The prestigious awards, organised by the Telegraph newspaper group, were voted for by readers of Ultratravel and the recognition is further confirmation of La Manga Club’s deserved reputation as one of the world’s top sports and leisure destinations after being named as the best golf resort in Spain by Today’s Golfer magazine for the third year in a row earlier this year.

Jose Asenjo, general manager of La Manga Club, said: “La Manga Club always aspires to offering our guests the very best facilities and holiday experience.

“To have been shortlisted for such a prestigious award alongside such other great names in golf is a tremendous honour for the resort and is a clear illustration of the high regard that La Manga Club continues to be held in across the world.”

Featuring outstanding facilities including three 18-hole championship golf courses and an array of other five-star sports and leisure amenities and numerous bars and restaurants, La Manga Club has established itself as a firm favourite with visiting golfers since opening in 1972.

The resort is a regular host of high-profile professional and amateur tournaments, including hosting this year’s Spanish International Amateur Seniors Championship and the prestigious PGAs of Europe 1st La Manga Club International Pro-Am, and added to its world-class facilities this spring by opening its new Leadbetter Golf Academy – the only such facility in mainland Spain.

Set in an area three times the size of Monaco, La Manga Club boasts a proud sporting history including featuring South African star Gary Player as the resort’s first director of golf and European Tour legend Severiano Ballesteros as the complex’s touring professional between 1980-85.

European Ryder Cup star Luke Donald cut his golfing teeth at the resort during his school holidays on his way to becoming world number one while the award-winning venue is also the official overseas training base of the Lawn Tennis Association.

In addition, the resort offers the ideal place for budding sports stars of the future to hone their skills with a wide selection of academies for boys and girls of all ages including golf, tennis, cricket, rugby, athletics, football and dance, and a range of fun-packed activities in its junior club.

La Manga Club features unrivalled facilities as a sports and leisure destination and, as well as its golf courses, includes a 28-court tennis centre and a 2,000sqm spa and fitness centre. It also offers the choice of a five-star hotel, four-star serviced apartments and townhouses and more than 20 bars and restaurants.
