New Callaway driver is an instant hit with Mickelson

By: | Tue 05 Feb 2013

We think it is safe to say that Phil Mickelson likes his new Callaway driver, he powered his way to a first career wire-to-wire win at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, and then predicted that thanks to the performance of his new RAZR Phil Mickleson Waste Management OpenFit Xtreme Driver, he could be about to ‘potentially play some of the best golf I’ve ever played’.

“I had something really important happen to me on Tuesday when I got this Driver. This has really changed my game. I drove it phenomenal all week,” said an excited Mickelson, who so nearly started his four rounds at TPC Scottsdale with a 59, ‘lipping-out’ on the 18th.

Such was the four-time Major champion’s dominance throughout the tournament – he led by four at the end of the first two rounds and by six heading into Sunday’s deciding 18 holes – that he chalked up one eagle, an incredible 29 birdies and only played two out of the 72 holes over par.

His 28-under finish recorded the second-lowest total ever in a 72-hole tournament on the US PGA TOUR and also awarded Mickelson another milestone, becoming the first player to post a US PGA TOUR victory for a record 10 consecutive years.

Mickelson, who also led the tournament field in ‘greens in regulation’, added:This Driver spins so low that I can have more loft on the club, making it easier to hit.  This has got to be good for every player I would think, but it sure as heck is good for me!

What’s in the bag – Phil Mickelson

Driver: RAZR Fit Xtreme, 9.5°

Irons: RAZR X Muscleback (4-PW)

Wedges: JAWS Wedges (52°, 62°, 64°)

Putter: Odyssey Black Series Tour Design #9

Golf Ball: HEX Black Tour

As the longest fully adjustable Driver Callaway has ever measured, the RAZR Fit Xtreme debuts new technologies to advance overall performance and promote greater yardage.

Designed for a player looking to ‘tune’ their ball flight to create more distance, in the low lofts, it is perfect for players seeking a Tour inspired head shape that produces a strong, penetrating flight that maximises carry and overall distance.  The higher lofts are designed for a player looking to increase their distance while having the maximum ability to correct their ball flight.

Mickelson opted for a Driver set-up that positioned a 5g weight in the toe and 3g in the heel, marrying this to a Mitsubishi Rayon Fubuki K. 059 prototype model 70X shaft.

He concluded: “Because the RAZR Fit Xtreme allowed me to be personally fitted, I was able to get dialed into a set-up where my ball flight was straight.  Now I am able to make the same golf swing as with my irons ? it really could be a revolutionary club for me.”

Neil Howie, managing director and president of Callaway Golf Europe, Middle East and Africa, said: “For a player of Phil’s calibre to see such a dramatic improvement when switching to the new RAZR Fit Xtreme tells its own story. Like Phil, we’re convinced all golfers will experience greater power and shot-making potential from this club.”
