Will Matt Fitzpatrick win his second major this season?

Not all that long ago Matt Fitzpatrick was plummeting down the world rankings. It looked unlikely he’d be competing for a spot in the 2025 Ryder Cup team, and it looked certain he wouldn't be competing for any trophies any time soon. Fast forward to today - he’s just won his third PGA Tour event of the season and we’ve barely even started.

This time last year, major champion Fitzpatrick, had drifted all the way to 85th in the world rankings. In the space of a year, he has catapulted himself up to third in the world rankings. The Sheffield spirit is relentless for a comeback story!

Matt Fitzpatrick's Comeback Journey

Matt Fitzpatrick

We first saw a hint that Fitzpatrick was returning to form at last year's Rocket Classic, where he claimed a T8 finish. This is nothing if it's only a one off, but it wasn’t. The next three tournaments Fitzpatrick featured in, he claimed top 10 finishes, one of them being a T4 at the Open Championship. This streak of steady finishes showed the early signs that Fitzpatrick was finding his rhythm again. It also set up his late Ryder Cup push.

Most people still had Matt Fitzpatrick written off for a Ryder Cup call up at this point, but Luke Donald had the seen the light at least. As the PGA Tour season wound down, Fitzpatrick hit up the DP World Tour to give his game one final showcase. Two more top ten finishes came and Donald rewarded him with his fourth Ryder Cup spot.

Matt Fitzpatrick arrived in New York with a sketchy Ryder Cup record and solid portion of doubters. Two and a half points later he left New York respected and admired. When people think about Fitzpatrick in the 2025 Ryder Cup, they immediately jump to his tie with Bryson DeChambeau in the Sunday singles, where he let a five-up lead slip. He played incredibly in the days prior, and I think that gets overlooked sometimes. As well as that, I truly don’t think there was anyone on the European team that could have held off DeChambeau’s comeback, I even think many would have given up a full point! Either way, the Ryder Cup, I believe, was one of the most pivotal moments in Matt Fitzpatrick's comeback journey.

Before returning to PGA Tour for the 2026 season, Fitzpatrick casually picked up the DP World Tour Championship. If you didn’t think he was coming back yet, you did now. The opening weeks of the 2026 season were in fact, a little bit patchy. The Players Championship rolled around, however, and Fitzpatrick was a different animal. It was a gut-wrenching finish on 18 as Cam Young came away with it in the end. But the Englishman returned at the Valspar Championship a week later and went one better, leaving with the title.

A few weeks later, Fitzpatrick claimed his second career victory at the RBC Heritage, going to a playoff once again. This time against the world number one, Scottie Scheffler. Truthfully, watching this live, I was not confident. I can’t think of many golfers on the tour right now that could take the American into a playoff and come out on top. What I learned is that Fitzpatrick could.

And just last weekend we saw Fitzpatrick at his best once again. But it was double trouble. The Fitzpatrick brothers teamed up at the Zurich Classic, and to make a long story short, we now have two Fitzpatricks on the PGA Tour.

A lot of people reacted to this victory like Matt had absolutely carried his brother Alex round the course, when in fact, it was incredibly even between the pair. They were so in sync with each other, and Alex most certainly does deserve to be on the PGA Tour following this victory. But that is a different conversation.

Will We See Matt Fitzpatrick Win His Second Major This Season?

Matt Fitzpatrick Tweet

At the beginning of the season, I put a tweet out, stating my strong belief that Matt Fitzpatrick very much could win his second major this season. His game is currently the best it's been since he won the US Open at Brookline back in 2022. He’s demonstrated that he can compete and challenge the very best of the best and come out on top. Now sitting at third in the world rankings, he will surely be a favourite for the remaining three majors in the season.

Fitzpatrick was a strong favourite heading to Augusta this year, but it just wasn’t to be. His Friday was quite weak, and he never quite made up for it across the weekend. Nevertheless, a top 20 finish at the Masters is still good golf.

Matt Fitzpatrick has had an incredible return to form in the past year, and it could go anywhere from here. Do you think we will see him continue his hot streak and claim his second major this season?
