Golfers shocked by closure of beloved course after 116 years
Despite the boom in participation numbers that the game has experienced throughout the UK in recent years, that hasn't changed the difficult reality facing many golf clubs as they seek to withstand pressures that have led to some closing their doors and the fear of proposed closures elsewhere.
There was shock within the golfing community of the North East of England when it was revealed that Dinsdale Golf Club, a venue with a significant history of 116 years, would shut for the final time at the beginning of April.
As reported by the Northern Echo, the owners of the site, who purchased the facility in 2018, have decided that operations will cease, with the specific reasoning behind that move yet to be publicly revealed.
Reviewers on Golfshake have positively rated Dinsdale in the past, with one golfer posting their assessment for us: "Beautiful course in lovely surroundings, love the layout with a couple of exceptionally picturesque holes. Challenging without being overly difficult to score if you're playing well."

Commenting on the imminent loss of this course, the Teesside and District Union of Golf Clubs said: "We are very sad to hear of the news that Dinsdale Golf Club has announced plans to close. A club with a long and proud history which will be missed.
"This is always a difficult time for everyone involved. Our best wishes go to all the team and members for the future."
Addressing the impact it will have on golfers in the area, the Durham County Golf Union also released a detailed statement: "We understand that the decision has been made because the owners feel the time is right for them to step away and focus on other aspects of their lives, including family and other business interests.
"It would be inappropriate to speculate on any other reasons for the closure.
"Dinsdale Golf Club has long been regarded as a wonderful golf course and an asset within our Union of 43 affiliated clubs.
"Established in 1910, it has served as an important golfing venue and valued community facility within County Durham for well over a century. Its closure will be keenly felt.
"Our thoughts are very much with the staff and members of Dinsdale at this difficult time.
"We sincerely hope that the employed members of staff are able to find alternative employment very quickly and are not badly affected for too long.
"We also hope that the members of the club are not lost to the game of golf and are able to find membership at other clubs in the local area, particularly clubs within the Durham County Golf Union, as soon as possible.
"While we are not currently aware of any plans regarding the course and facilities beyond March, we remain hopeful that there may yet be a viable future for the site and that golf could continue to be played there in the years ahead.
"We are fully aware, and appreciative, of the tremendous amount of time, focus, commitment and finance that the current owners have invested in Dinsdale Golf Club since taking it over in 2018.
"Their endeavours have managed to develop, modernise and improve the course and facilities at the club. We wish them well as they move on."
Whether there is a future for the course remains to be seen, but nearby clubs have already opened their arms to those golfers who will soon be displaced.
The Darlington Golf Club was among the venues to describe their sadness at the closure, but extended a welcoming hand to members and regular visitors of Dinsdale.
"We’ve been fortunate to receive many inquiries from golfers seeking a new home, and we’re excited to offer a space for golfers of all levels to continue enjoying the game, whether playing a round or relaxing in our clubhouse," the club said on social media.
"We invite Dinsdale members, or anyone looking for a new golfing home, to join us at Darlington Golf Club. Our team is here to help make your transition smooth, and we’d love to show you around."
Similarly, Beamish Park released a statement on Facebook that showcased the strength of the golf community in this region.
"We were very sorry to hear the news that members of Dinsdale Spa Golf Club have been notified of the impending closure of their course.
"This is a difficult time for golf clubs everywhere, and it’s always sad to see any club face closure. While the circumstances surrounding this situation are not fully known, our thoughts are with all the members, staff, and everyone connected to the club during what must be an uncertain and upsetting time.
"Golf is more than just a game - it’s friendship, community, and shared memories. We hope members are able to find a new home soon to continue their golfing journey and keep enjoying the sport we all love.
"At Beamish Park Golf Club, we are a welcoming and friendly club. We would be delighted to welcome members of Dinsdale Spa should you wish to explore membership, play our beautiful course, or simply call in and enjoy our hospitality.
"Our doors are open, and you will be made very welcome."
Although these sentiments are laudable, it's nonetheless distressing to hear yet another tale of the curtain coming down on a beloved course with a rich heritage for the final time.
