Marco Penge What's in The Bag 2025

England's Marco Penge, who nearly lost his tour card last season, claimed the Danish Championship in Copenhagen to boost his Ryder Cup chances. It was his second victory of the year and propels him to second place in the Race to Dubai.

Penge began the final round one stroke behind home hope Rasmus Hojgaard and trailed by four after the sixth hole, but he fought his way to the top of the leaderboard early in the back nine as Hojgaard dropped four shots in four holes from the 10th. By finishing second, Hojgaard missed the chance to move into the sixth automatic spot for Europe’s Ryder Cup team. This week’s British Masters is the final event qualifying event.

Penge stood on the 18th tee with a two-shot lead over Hojgaard. The Dane produced a grandstand finish, closing with an eagle, but Penge held his nerve and holed a three-foot birdie putt to win by a shot after a round of 67.

He said: "I've been playing so well this year. My main goal after I won the Hainan Open was to not get complacent and drop off basically. My team have been a massive support for me, my family, everyone involved really.

"It's made me keep striving for more and this is amazing. And Rasmus, he's some player, to hit the shot he hit into the last and make eagle and basically make me have to win it was unbelievable. We were both pushing as hard as we could, and I was the winner at the end of the day, but I've loved every minute of playing two round of golf with him."

Who is Marco Penge?

Penge was born in Horsham on May 15, 1998. He showed talent in football as a child. He was a prolific goalscorer for Chesworth Rovers in Horsham, and received trials with Reading and Southampton. Influenced by his Italian father, Penge stated in 2014 that he supported Italy rather than England in that year’s World Cup.

Introduced to golf at age five, he became a scratch handicap player aged 13. In 2013, he won the McGregor Trophy, the Fairhaven Trophy, and lost a playoff for the Irish Boys Amateur Open. He represented England in the European Young Masters, European Boys Team Championship and Boys Home Internationals, which he won twice. He also won the Jacques Leglise Trophy three times with the Great Britain & Ireland team.

He left school at the start of 2014 to pursue golf full-time. Penge won the 2015 Scottish Amateur Strokeplay and lost in a playoff at the 2016 Internationaux de France. In 2017, he was runner-up at both the Spanish Amateur and the NSW Amateur.

In 2016, he won the Sunningdale Foursomes with his girlfriend and fellow golfer Sophie Lamb. They married in 2023 and had their first child in 2024

He turned professional in 2017 and joined the EuroPro Tour. In 2019 he won his first title, the Prem Group Irish Masters, and finished third on the Order of Merit to earn promotion to the 2020 Challenge Tour.

He was runner-up at the 2022 Kaskada Golf Challenge before securing two titles in 2023 including the Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final to top the Order of Merit and earn promotion to the 2024 DP World Tour.

In his third start, he tied for fourth at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa. He would go on to finish 110th in the 2024 Race to Dubai, keeping his card by the skin of his teeth.

In December 2024, Penge received a three-month ban from competing in DP World Tour events for breaching the tour's "Integrity Programme" in relation to betting on golf tournaments. From 2022 to 2023, he had placed bets with an average stake of £24. He made a profit of around £250 on these wagers, and the bookmaker subsequently notified the tour of his activity. None of Penge's bets were placed on tournaments in which he played.

After his return from suspension, Penge emerged with a new focus. He finished third at the South African Open in March. The following month, he shot 17-under 271 to win the Hainan Classic. It was his first win in his 47th start and he has continued with that excellent form all season. He was tied second at the Scottish Open and tied 11th at the BMW International Open. This was his second win in his 56th start.

His victory in Denmark takes him to second place in the Race to Dubai and brings him firmly into the picture for a Ryder Cup pick.
