PrimePutt Putting Mat Review

I’ve always maintained that putting should be the easiest part of golf. After all, you can play the stroke one handed with your eyes closed.

Yet as I’m getting older and the greens seemingly faster, my long held confidence is fading fast. I’ve had a lesson and I, like many, need to practice.

What better way to do so than on your own putting mat indoors at home?

There are a number of essential elements to putting - sound technique to produce consistent strike, aim, ability to start on line, pace control and green reading. A putting mat is ideal for all of these apart from green reading, so what better place to start with the added advantage that you can practice any time, rain or shine.

PrimePutt Putting Mat

PrimePutt Putting Mat

I tested a mat from one of the market leaders, PrimePutt, a US company that produces one of the best on the market.

It is available in three sizes - 9ft x 3ft, 12 x 3ft and 15 x 3ft. I tested the medium sized XL version over a good period of time to see how it performed.

The mats can be used outside on a hard level surface, but are best stored inside if you chose that option. Obviously if you have space inside to leave it down almost permanently you are in a far better position to practice regularly.

PrimePutt say the mat is made of premium quality nylon turf used by the pros and is commonly found in putting studios internationally.

It is said to roll consistently between 10-12 on the stimpmetre to provide as realistic feedback to the real thing as you can get.

How it Works

Out of the box it rolled smooth immediately, and I could tell it really was top quality material. Once down on my tiled floor it laid perfectly flat and its backing material and good weight ensured no slippage in use.

At one end are three regulation sized white plastic cups, sufficient to give a real feel of the ball dropping, or lipping out. A wooden backstop fits at the end of the mat to stop over-hit shots running under the sofa.

Small white pips on the edges of the mat give distances spaced in yards.

Putting seemed very realistic, the ball rolled uniformly true and certainly simulated the feel associated with real turf.

The main purpose of an indoor putting mat is to help you improve your stroke and hone distance control. In other words, consistency, the holy grail of everything to do with improving your game.

It is easy to hit a number of putts without really thinking what you are doing, and this will not help you improve so to my mind you need to take a lesson from a putting expert and get fitted for the right putter.

To aid practice, PrimePutt has produced six putting drills which can be seen on its website here.

To be honest there was nothing to fault with this mat. It is easy to add a putting mirror and a few gates to aid your practice and all in all I think this mat would be a fantastic investment for anybody wanting to improve this vital element of their game. Practice anytime, rain or shine. What more can you ask for?

PrimePutt Putting Mat

Verdict
