Mao Saigo What's In The Bag

It will take some time to fully process what we witnessed on Sunday at the Chevron Championship. The final 90 minutes were remarkably dramatic, culminating in a five-way playoff that saw Japan's Mao Saigo claim her first major title.

Making birdie on the 72nd hole to finish at seven-under, the 23-year-old's round of 74 was enough to book her place in extra time alongside Lindy Duncan of the United States, Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand, South Korea's Hyo-Joo Kim and China's Yin Ruoning.

Duncan made bogey on the par five 18th hole at The Club at Carlton Woods in Texas, while Kim, Yin and Jutanugarn made par - Yin after playing a stunning approach to set up a potential eagle that she subsequently three-putted, while Jutanugarn, twice a major champion, could have won it in regulation but whiffed a chip shot from a heavy lie off the green.

These mishaps opened the door for Saigo, who rolled in her five-footer for birdie to become the first Japanese winner of this event.

Answering questions through the aid of a translator, Saigo reflected: "I was so laser focused and nervous and really in the zone. All I could think of was the ball in front of me. I couldn't see anything else.

"I was shaking from nervousness, but I did my best to calm down and I shot and it went in."

Having won six times on the LPGA of Japan Tour, Saigo is used to that winning feeling, but this is another level entirely. "It was my dream to earn this major.

"It is my first time to win this tournament. I was able to realise my dream and I'm very happy about this."

Now 13th in the Rolex World Rankings, last season's LPGA Tour Rookie of the Year has big ambitions. "I still have four more majors to go, and I want to shoot for number one in the world. I will do my best in the remaining four majors."
