West London Golf Course Will Close in June

By: | Fri 22 Mar 2024

Last year, we addressed the news that Perivale Park Golf Course was facing potential closure by Ealing Council, but that has now been confirmed and the municipal layout will be shut down in June.

Back in September, Councillor Peter Mason, Leader of Ealing Council, said: "We are creating a rare opportunity for an incredible new regional park in our capital. The Elizabeth II Park has transformed the east of London and this new regional park has the potential to have similar positive effect on the borough and West London."

That is the fate of the course that has been part of the community for almost a century, as it will now be transformed into a park, which is the latest stage of the council’s commitment to creating ten new parks in the area.

Councillor Deirdre Costigan, deputy leader and cabinet member for climate action, said: "Almost two thirds of residents have backed our plan to open this new park in Perivale, which will be the second of the ten new parks we promised to deliver, and we hope will eventually form part of the regional park. We’ve already got plans to plant wildflower meadows and install benches, paths and new signage in the park but we’re looking forward to designing the final layout in partnership with local people - including agreeing a new name!"

During a public consultation that was conducted between October and December, more than 62% of local residents said they supported closing Perivale Park Golf Course to make way for the opening of a park. With the eventual aim being the creation of a regional park, 76% of those who responded to the survey backed this move.

However, for the golfers who played here, and launched a petition that surpassed 3,700 signatures, this announcement will come as a bitter blow.

When the plans were first mooted, the individuals behind the survey commented: "After nearly 100 years Ealing Council want to close Perivale Park Golf Course and rewild the area.

"This is the only nine hole municipal course left in Ealing. It is a very diverse, inclusive and accessible club open to everyone used regularly by all ethnic backgrounds, young, old and all abilities at an affordable price, supporting people’s health and well-being.

"The cafe which is open to everyone is also under threat. It is a social hub for all those using the golf course, sports facilities next door, walking groups and clients from local health care facilities creating a real sense of community in a safe environment. We have been informed there is every chance the cafe will also close."

There was an accompanying video that was released on YouTube in support of the course.

But now the worst fears of local golfers have been realised and balls will no longer be struck at Perivale Park. We sincerely hope that everyone involved finds somewhere nearby to continue playing the game, but that will be scant consolation to those who have enjoyed this layout for generations.
