Golfers Who Could Win Their First Major in 2024

By: | Fri 22 Dec 2023

The pinnacle of professional golf has long been major championships, where the pressure is cranked to the maximum and every breath feels heavier.

Winning one of these events is no easy task, as more than 140 of the world’s greatest superstars are all in contention.

However, once declared a major champion, their life will seldom be the same; invites to all the premium events and tremendous marketing deals typically follow such a glorious victory.

There are several talented figures who are yet to record their first major championship in the men's game, a bunch of gifted players who fans believe a victory is imminent for.

Before we reveal our selections: who do you think will win their first major championship in 2024?

Viktor Hovland

Viktor Hovland enjoyed a stellar 2023, winning the PGA Tour Championship and scooping notable titles along the way. He picked up two top 10 finishes in major championships, finishing T7 at Augusta before culminating his PGA Championship in T2. Three victories were earned in the calendar year of 2023, all of which were important tournaments - the Memorial Tournament, BMW Championship and the aforementioned Tour Championship.

Not only did Hovland mature as a golfer but a person too, as the 26-year-old is quickly becoming one of the more popular members on tour. He exudes a calmness and openness that is not typically found in every player; he’s willing to let fans see him at his best and his worst. As he continues to mature in the mainstream media, will unprecedented success follow the supremely talented golfer?

Tyrrell Hatton

Tyrrell Hatton joins Viktor Hovland in being very popular figures on tour and the Englishman has won the hearts of his American audience through his expletive rants about the golf course or anything that is standing in his way of success! Whilst the 32-year-old is a highly entertaining character, he’s also a pretty nifty golfer who has won several important titles in his career. Having broke through on the PGA EuroPro Tour in 2012, Hatton made his name when he won the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill in 2020.

Since turning professional, he has become a reliable member of the European Ryder Cup team too, contributing to their latest victory in Rome. Interestingly, Hatton has not won a professional event since January 2021, when he won the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. A year to forget in major finishes too, his best position was T15 at the PGA Championship but he did make every cut. Hatton has showcased his ability as a golfer on multiple occasions and just a major championship is missing from his impressive resume so far.

Ludvig Aberg

Perhaps the most logical choice, Ludvig Aberg is destined for superstar territory. If his amateur and collegiate career failed to impress fans, then his cameo during the Ryder Cup demonstrated the capabilities that this young man holds. When he was picked for the Ryder Cup team there were plenty of groans, but it did not take the Swede long to highlight how he won the trust of Luke Donald so quickly.

Aberg hits the ball a long way, which has been increasingly useful in golf since the turn of the millennium. With the ball being roll backed, you’d argue the biggest hitters will be impacted less as they’ll likely be going from a wedge to a 9-iron, as opposed to a 7- to a 6-iron like many of the average hitters. Having already won on the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour, the next step is a major championship - will 2024 be the first of many?

Tommy Fleetwood

Will he, won’t he? Tommy Fleetwood has golf fans on the edge of their seat four times a year and his remarkable talent and attitude will surely see him over the line eventually. Fleetwood went winless in 2023 but he yet again delivered for Europe in the Ryder Cup, a competition that he is quickly making his own. It has been a little over 12 months since Fleetwood’s last win - the Nedbank Golf Challenge, his second victory of the event - but the Englishman has played really good golf.

He culminated his major campaign with two top 10 finishes - U.S. Open and The Open Championship - and he made the cut in all four events. Across the last eight majors, Fleetwood has recorded four top 10 finishes, which is his best streak to date. He struggled in majors between 2020 - 2021 but it looks like the best Fleetwood version is back!

Tom Kim

All members of this list are likeable characters and they have earned a following on tour, but not many are as relatable or down to earth as Tom Kim. Kim is unique as you could argue he’s not been media trained, which allows interviewers to get more out of questions to him. Due to this, we have all enjoyed press conferences that involve the South Korean, as he could very well say anything!

From a golfing perspective, the 21-year-old is a real warrior. Since debuting on tour back in 2022, he has won three times on the PGA Tour. Two Shriners Children’s Opens and a Wyndham Championship make up his American resume, and he has also won twice on the Asian Tour too. The previous season saw Kim feature in all four majors for the first time in his career, finishing T8 at the U.S. Open and T2 at The Open Championship. Again, Tom Kim is just 21 years of age. With four more attempts for major glory, Kim could very well kick off his tally with a win in 2024.

Max Homa

Max Homa’s grit as a professional can never be questioned; after losing his PGA Tour card following two made cuts in 16 events, he grinded back to the top via the route below. In contemporary times, golf fans know the character of Homa and just how special his talent is. This was not always the case as the American struggled earlier in his career, only to overcome those obstacles and become a leading player on the PGA Tour.

Despite his resurgence in form, his performances in major championships have come under scrutiny. Despite this, the American recorded his first top 10 in a major at The Open Championship in July 2023 - so he is certainly trending in the right direction. Homa was one of America’s reliable players during the 2023 Ryder Cup and blossomed in the team format - can he be selfish and earn a major solely for himself, though?
