Todd Clements Player Profile And What's In The Bag

By: | Tue 29 Aug 2023

COMETH the hour, cometh the men. Robert MacIntyre may not have won the Czech Masters but he produced a final round of 66 to finish in a tie for fifth place. The significance of that finish is that he ended the week one shot ahead of Yannik Paul, his nearest rival for the final automatic qualifying position in the European points list for Luke Donald’s Ryder Cup team.

However, the Ryder Cup is of no concern to Todd Clements, who won the Czech Masters thanks to a fabulous final round of 63. He ended the week on 266, 22 under par, and pipped Matt Wallace by a single shot at Albatross Golf Club.

Clements carded nine birdies at Albatross Golf Resort to finish 22 under par, a shot ahead of overnight joint leader Wallace, who needed to birdie the last from eight feet to force a play-off but saw his putt slip past the edge of the hole.

It was a blow for Wallace, who narrowly missed out on a Ryder Cup spot in 2018 and aims to make Luke Donald’s European team as a wild card pick for next month.

Instead it was Clements who pulled off the surprise win and he said: “Given the circumstances that’s got to be the best round of my life, I’ve dreamt about winning for a long time and with my birthday coming up on Tuesday I couldn’t be happier.

“I know I can compete at this level. I’ve always believed it deep down and to show it today I’m very proud of myself. We knew we needed a fast start and luckily I hit some nice shots that got me in the mix."

Clements, who started the final round three shots behind joint leaders Wallace and Sami Valimaki, birdied his first three holes and then three more from the sixth to reach 19 under at the turn.

Three more birdies followed from the 11th as he surged into the lead. He missed a 20-footer for a 10th birdie on the last which would have seen him break the tournament scoring record.

But his 63 matched the lowest round of the week, also scored by Wallace who also missed a 10-foot birdie putt on the 15th as his wait for a first win on the DP World Tour in five years continued.

Player Profile

Clements was born on August 29, 1993.

He started the week ranked 394th in the world and in 151st place in the Race to Dubai - the victory secures his playing rights for next season.

He finished in 16th place on the 2022 Road to Mallorca Rankings to gain his place on the DP World Tour. This is his rookie season. He has also won on the EuroPro Tour.

Among his highlights last year was victory in the Irish Challenge at The K Club, venue of the 2006 Ryder Cup, and a runner-up finish at the Emporia Challenge in Spain.

The 2017 English Amateur champion admits he is still coming to terms with his new surroundings but is relishing the opportunity he has worked so hard to earn.

“I am learning the ropes, embracing what is to come,” he said. “There are going to be some challenges, I know that.”
