10 Players to Watch at the US Open

By: | Mon 14 Jun 2021

Bryson DeChambeau is the defending champion at the 121st US Open, the second to be played at the scenic Torrey Pines in San Diego. No one will ever forget the drama when Tiger Woods battled crippling pain to overcome Rocco Mediate in a playoff - and we can only hope for similar extraordinary scenes this week.

Always an exacting challenge, the US Open has been dominated by home players in recent years, but international stars have often etched their name into the history of America's national championship.

Who will be that man this time? Golfshake's Derek Clements picks out ten names, a mixture of leading favourites and relative outsiders, who we should pay attention to as the event progresses.

Brooks Koepka

Brooks Koepka

It is impossible to underestimate what he achieved at Kiawah Island, finishing second while in constant pain. The consummate competitor.

Bryson DeChambeau

They said Winged Foot would find him out. It didn’t. They say Torrey Pines will find him out. And do you know what? It probably won’t either.

Justin Thomas

Justin Thomas

Uncharacteristic struggles since his fine victory in The Players Championship. But has the perfect game for Torrey Pines.

Daniel Berger

The American has been a man transformed since the lockdown ended and if the wind blows he could be very, very difficult to beat.

Louis Oosthuizen

Louis Oosthuizen

Does anybody on the PGA Tour possess a better swing? No. Is a big-time player and a second major is long overdue.

Victor Perez

Perez is a beautiful ball striker who has his sights set on the Ryder Cup and is a big-time performer. Due a big finish on US soil.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout

Hugely underrated South African who hits the ball a mile and has a wonderful temperament. Briefly contended at Kiawah Island.

Robert MacIntyre

The Scottish left-hander sets his sights high and believes he has the game to win a major. Absolutely wonderful putter.

Matt Wallace

Matt Wallace

If he can keep his cool and accept the inevitable bad breaks then the Englishman has half a chance this week.

Garrick Higgo

Fabulous young South African golfer who is surely destined for great things and now has his first PGA Tour win. Big hitter with a fabulous short game.
