Mizuno Genem GTX Golf Shoes Review

REVIEW: Mizuno Genem GTX

By: | Thu 20 Aug 2020

The Genem GTX is another impressive shoe released by the revered Japanese brand, Mizuno, a full grain leather model that is packed with technology, including the lace-free BOA closure system that tightens and loosens courtesy of a dial on the side. Golfshake Ambassador Mel Davies has been testing these golf shoes and describes them for us.

Tech Specs

  • BOA CLOSURE SYSTEM: The Boa closure system adds ease to putting your shoe on and off. Boa dial is used for tightening/releasing system.
  • BUILT ON WAVE RUNNING TECHNOLOGY: Award-winning cushioning and stability trusted by runners worldwide.
  • GORE-TEX WATERPROOF: New breathable membrane is durable and breathable – for all year-round versatility.
  • IG5 SPIKE TECHNOLOGY; Fast Twist universal spike with quick tightening and release system. With two additional spikes and wrench.

Looks

I think these shoes look great. A bit more “traditional” looking in some ways but also fashionable, especially with the BOA system and dial on the side. The leather looks great and is very clean and tidy. The sole with the IG5 Spike Technology gives these shoes a very striking and modern look.

Feel

I was a bit concerned at how these would fit and feel as when I first had them they looked a bit narrow and I have quite wide feet, so finding a comfortable fitting shoe can be a struggle. But my fears were allayed when I put them on as they were a very nice fit and the leather was extremely soft and comfortable. They feel very sturdy without being heavy. Through the swing they are as stable a golf shoe as I’ve ever tried.

Performance

I’ve worn these about half a dozen times already and they really do stand up to any other golf shoes I’ve had before. Very comfortable, the BOA system is simple to use but very effective at getting that snug fit that sometimes you can struggle to find with lace up shoes. The best part for me is how stable they feel throughout all parts of the golf swing, whether it be on the tee, in the rough (I spend a lot of time there) or in the bunker, at no time have I had and loss of traction. I’ve also worn them twice in what I can only describe as torrential rain and on both occasions I came off and my socks and feet were bone dry.

Verdict

Pros

Comfortable, easy to use BOA system, very stable, look great (I have them in black but they also come in a very nice grey) and most importantly perform well on the course.

Cons

I can find nothing negative to say about these shoes. Some have commented on the style, but that's down to personal preference. I think they look great.

The Bottom Line

This is yet another fantastic addition by Mizuno. Different to the Wave Cadence, which I’ve reviewed before, but again right up there with the other golf shoe manufacturers. The BOA system is a tremendous feature. Having a two-year waterproof guarantee is also superb. The spike system and the traction that gives you does make a big difference especially when you want to really go at a shot. It’s great knowing you have shoes that won’t let you down throughout the swing.
