What the club says: The Alvor Course
Located primarily in the northern portions of the property, the Alvor Course assumes a parkland character playing through corridors lined with mature Pine trees. Elevation change is integral to the design of this nine as a majority of the golf holes ascend hillsides or descend through intimate valleys. The parkland setting disappears momentarily and the mature trees area is replaced with a series of holes that are more exposed. A momentary preview of the dunesland holes to come is also provided in the sixth and seventh holes. As the round concludes, the course ascends once again into the parkland character.

The Lagos Course
The Lagos Course begins with the same parkland character. This course incorporates the only two lakes found on the entire site in the short par 3 third hole and the long par 4 sixth hole. Holes seven and eight immerse golfers into the expansive dunes lands on the southwestern portion of the site. The round concludes ascending to the clubhouse and transitioning back yet again into a more parkland setting.

The Praia Course
The third nine at Palmares presents the golf experience every great designer dreams of having the privilege to create: a seaside dunesland exposed to the elements. The four seaside holes are bracketed by the beach and the rail line. The course opens descending from a parkland setting. Abruptly, the second hole whisks golfers into the true coast duneslands. This dunes character is carried forward through the remainder of the golf course with the closing hole, a strong uphill par 5, rising back out of the dunes through a deep valley to an amphitheatre just below the clubhouse.

The other two nines are in poor condition.
Please read RECENT TripAdvisor reviews on the course, I wish I had. Not told beforehand of issues relating to the abysmal greens and poor fairways and they still charge full price for playing and for the cart.

One of the very best 27 holes in the whole of Portugal and my favourite. I can't find anything not to like about Palmares especially if you get to play the Praia loop. Conditioning has always been good although a hear it suffered from a recent drought along with a few other courses on the Algarve. Well worth the visit for the clubhouse alone.

Could Be Great

This course could be great (even the best in the Algarve) if they sorted the water problem out. 3 different 9's all very different. Overlooks the sea on numerous holes.
If they got the fairways watered and it was not so dry then it would be up there as one of, if not the nicest course in the Algarve, Shame.

Nice course worth playing

Third time playing Palmares, it's clubhouse has been rebuilt since last here and looks stunning. Played the Alvor/Lagos combination which is the best 18 in my opinion. Some nice looking holes playing down to the sea. Greens okay a bit patchy in places as were the fairways, perhaps spent all the money on the clubhouse and hotel and forgot to maintain the course. Still enjoyed the round though.

Alvor course currently very dry / scorched, meaning the fairways are very firm - good for distance but challenging for ball striking with irons. Praia is always a challenge with a lot of sand and difficult lines into greens.

First time worth a visit

Our first time here and it was very pleasant. They have 3 lots of nine holes and we played the one along the coastline. Personally I am not a big fan of links golf so of the two 9 holes preferred the other nine. But for those that like a few dunes and coastline, this will fit the bill.

Awesome place

I'd seen the pictures on the internet and Palmares looked spectacular and we weren't disappointed. There are three nines, which can be played as three 18-hole combinations to add plenty of variety if you are there for a few days. The Alvor offers a gentle start and the first three holes nice but nothing spectacular, but it ramps up several notches after that with some superb elevated tee shots down towards the ocean. The Prai nine has a links feel to it - a bit more wild and rugged right down by the sea, while the Lagos nine probably has a bit of both. There was not a weak hole among them. Greens were in great condition, facilities were superb and some of the views are just epic. Amazing place to play golf.

NIce course to play whilst on holiday

Played at this golf resort last year, this year thought we would return and play Alvor/Lagos combo, which to me are the best. Good practice area, clubhouse nothing special but great views from terrace down towards the sea overlooking the Praia 9 holes. Course in great condition, greens mint. Some great views to be had especially from high part of the course with nice looking holes down to the sea. Recommending hiring a buggy as quite hilly in places. Would return for sure.

Very disappointing service

Palmares is a great course let down by a lack of buggies and appalling customer service. We arrived for our first round almost two hours before tee off and we still did not have the correct buggies and range balls we had paid for with 5 minutes to go till our tee time. The staff on reception are incredibly rude, they talk to you like you are a criminal for making the slightest request, mix up requests from different groups and spend most of their time either on the phone to persons unknown or shouting down walkie talkies to the buggy attendants who then say they have not heard from the reception when you speak to them. For the second round the staff were again very rude from the outset and told us our booking of two three balls had been changed to a 2 and a 4 to accommodate another 2 ball. Eventually they agreed to let us play as 2 three balls 20 minutes earlier, so again we had to rush to sort things out. After the first 9 being done in 1 hour 45 we had a 1 hour wait to tee off on the 10th as the system to merge in people from other courses obviously doesn't work and 6 groups arrived on the tee at the same time. It then took a further 3 hours to play the back 9 in very slow conditions so it ended up being a 6 hour round. I don't mind a 10-15 minute wait to tee off on a back 9 but an hour is ridiculous. Considering the course is incredibly expensive the whole experience was very disappointing, I would not go back there or recommend it unless you are a small group playing early in the morning and don't mind a 5 hour round. There are some fantastic holes but I judge a course on the whole experience from when you arrive until you leave and most of the Palmares experience was unpleasant.

Nice course with great scenery

Played this course for first time which is made up of 3 seperate 9 hole tracks, Alvor, Lagos & Praia, decided to do the Praia combined with Alvor. The praia is a true links type track, quite tough as narrow fairways and plenty of rough gorse type areas, few blind shots. The Alvor was much better, more inland but with stunning views out to sea, generally much better condition than Praia. Next time we will play the Alvor & Lagos combination.
