Quinta da Marinha Golf Course Review

The five-star hotel based at Quinta da Marinha was graded by TripAdvisor in 2022 as being in the top 1% of all the luxury hotels in the world. Renovations and upgrades are still planned to allow it to maintain its excellent standing and reputation. It is superbly located and framed by a playable resort golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones Junior.

Since my 2017 visit, the course layout has been altered. I love the proximity of the greens to the swimming pool and sunbathing areas to the rear of the hotel.

My room was fabulously appointed and the balcony had views over the golf course and the pool.

The food and facilities were of an excellent standard and this venue offers a perfect location for the tourist golfer.

The golf course at QDM is a resort style that is popular and attracts heavy use. Despite this the greens were true and well maintained.

It was a very enjoyable golfing experience with a fun layout that is well managed and maintained with an emphasis towards customer service provision at every point for its guests. There was an excellent pace of play maintained throughout by effective management by marshalling staff.

The previous 9th hole now opens the course with a long, straight par 5 requiring accurate placement to avoid the canopy of trees.

Hole 2 is a short par 3 that can be a challenge as the tee box is very sheltered and offers no clear indication of the wind direction at the green. All the short holes on the course offer an interesting challenge due to the excellent bunkering and imposing water hazards.

I particularly enjoyed hole 6 that is a double dogleg par 5. The greenside bunkering is clever as it gives the false impression of the area of the green to aim for in the approach. Only on reaching the green did I appreciate that there is much more room to the right side than I initially appreciated.

Hole 10 was the previous closing hole and is wonderfully positioned adjacent to the swimming pool and sun terrace of the hotel. Another excellent par 5 that is protected by water to the left and right with a challenging tee shot requiring sensible use of the double fairway.

I also enjoyed hole 13 that provides some wonderfully elevated ocean views. Take note of the slopes in the green and err on the side of a short approach rather than risk the swales that encourage the ball to run off into trouble.

Hole 14 is another lovely short hole over a substantial ravine. Anything short is drawn back towards the ravine as the approaches are closely cropped.

The closing hole has a very well-placed grass bunker with a large footprint that attracted several of our group's tee shots, making for an awkward stance for the shot into the green.

This is a well-designed and maintained resort golf course that was an enjoyable golfing experience.
