Stay & Play at Belton Woods

By: Andrew Picken | Mon 17 Sep 2018

Belton Woods combines an excellent hotel and spa with superb golf. It is easily accessible via the A1 from most parts of the country and is well worth a visit.

The estate provides two 18-hole championship golf courses that are great fun to play. It also has a smaller nine-hole layout complete with acdriving range and well equipped professional shop.

There is much more besides the golf for the rest of your time at the resort as Golfshake Ambassador Andrew Picken found out during a visit.

Golf

Both courses offer an excellent challenge and they provide a superb venue for society golf groups. They provide opportunities for competitive golf and some serious socialising.

Accommodation

In addition to 136 luxurious contemporary bedrooms, guests have the option of staying in exclusive two-or three-bedroom lodges within the resort’s private grounds.

The rooms are well appointed and equipped and the beds were of an excellent quality and extremely comfortable. Many provide a golf course view.

Food & Drink

The 19th Hole known as the Claret Jug, attached to the golf facility, is impressively large and provides substantial sit down meals and burgers etc. The starter's hut also has a half way house facility for portable snacks and drinks.

There are two substantial patio gallery areas where groups of golfers tend to congregate in order to watch others from their group attempt the difficult final holes. I love this. It provided a real atmosphere when finishing the round and encourages supportive banter. Table service to this area by staff ensures its continued popularity.

The restaurants available are of a good standard and the food offered was enjoyable, well cooked and hearty.

Food options include Stanton’s Brasserie, offering a carvery and rotisserie dinner menu, plus a wide selection of salads, English charcuterie, smoked fish, shellfish, and chef’s specials, while the informal Claret Jug (19th Hole) is used by guests and golfers throughout the day, for a snack or a quick beer or coffee.

Inside the hotel the main bar is a large and contemporary space with a very good selection of bar meals, snacks and drinks.

The separate main restaurant provides an excellent choice of food at breakfast and dinner with a buffet style to give you the option to choose exactly what you like. We experienced a combination of the a la carte and carvery menus. Both were excellent providing exactly the sort of hearty fare needed by groups of visiting golfers.

Spa

The recently refurbished health club contains a large indoor swimming pool, as well as a fitness studio, where exercise classes take place regularly. Belton Woods also offers tennis courts, squash, croquet, archery, and, of course, golf.
The state-of-the-art spa can provide individual treatments, calming spa days and tailored spa packages and breaks. Due to time constraints we were not able to use the facility but I spoke to several regular users who were very complimentary of the facility and its staff.

Getting There & Nearby Activities

Accessibility to this facility is a strength as it is located just minutes from the A1, less than an hour’s drive from East Midlands Airport and one hour by rail from London’s Kings Cross.

You could use this facility to explore Lincolnshire, in particular the city of Lincoln or Grantham but from a leisure perspective I would imagine that the majority of customers will stay on site and utilise the extensive range of facilities.

Within the complex there are established football pitches and an outdoor centre providing the opportunity for Carting, Quad Bikes, Paintball, Laser Tag, Archery and Ten Pin Bowling. It goes without saying that this is a very well equipped facility supported by a host of well trained and friendly staff who are clearly intent on providing a great experience for the guest.

Summary

Belton Woods prides itself on the staff they use. The quality of service and the friendly interaction we enjoyed was something I took particular note of during my stay.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable review visit and I would happily return with a group of society friends. This is the perfect venue for a Captain's Away Day or a couple of days away with friends golfing, relaxing and socialising.
