Overpriced
Unfortunately since the Crown Golf sale the new owners have not invested any money in the course or facilities. They has resulted in slow bumpy greens and overgrown tee boxes. However they are still happy to take ?160 for a fourball when it should be a lot less. No food apart from bacon rolls and getting a drink afterwards is not easy as choice is very limited. Won't be visiting again for a while as they have grand plans but there could take a year or 2. Shame as it's a decent layout with some good holes.Reviewer Rating

Very disappointed
I've played Merrist Wood many times over the last ten or so years and was always impressed with the club and course.Unfortunately, I was shocked to see the state of the club and course when I arrived on Saturday. From when you arrive in the car park, usually well kept and tidy, the signs of neglect were obvious and this continued into the clubhouse and on to the course.
Still a great course but not very well kept at all. Untidy fairways and bunkers and long grass cuttings just left on the fairways and first cut. Even managed to lose a ball on the fairway?disappeared under the grass cuttings.
It's such a shame that such a good course have been let to slip like this

Greenkeepers on holiday??!
Disappointed by the course conditions last weekend - the only round I can remember anywhere in 25 years where the grass clearly hadn't been cut for at least several days. The fairways were like rough, and dandelions covered the tee boxes and fairways. It was like playing in a meadow. On our one previous visit last October we were amazed how good the greens were despite incredibly wet conditions, sadly however they were pretty shabby this time, bobbley and patchy. Bunkers were all unloved too, and winter rules were stated as in effect.
The chap in the clubhouse told me the new owners (7 months in) are awaiting planning permission for a course redesign with Nick Faldo's architecture company, so I can only guess they won't invest much if anything in the course in the meantime.
It's a real shame as we think the layout is great but in this condition it's no where near worth the ?40 we paid unfortunately. The driving range wasn't open either.
Overall, Merrist Wood has good potential but is best avoided until they've invested in the course conditioning, and at least cut the grass.

Water hazards and holes in general are in the main a little 'samey', although there are a few that appeal to the eye.
Rough is currently 3 feet tall, so avoid at all cost!
Greens were fast and in reasonable condition although some are almost beyond a joke, with pins on swales so severe that two putts should be celebrated as you would a chip in!
All in all a disappointing experience for a mid handicapper who struggles on tight lies.

Good test of your game
Played here for the first time in many years and was pleasantly surprised by the course and clubhouse. Although a little longer than the courses we play regularly the wide fairways made it very enjoyable. Greens were quick and true, the only downside was some of the bunkers needed a bit of TLC.The clubhouse was very nice and the staff were very friendly. Would recommend a round here to any competent golfer.

Course looked like it needed some TLC and not kept well. Rough areas were too long, bunkers looked like dirt rather than sand and greens were worn. Prices need to reflect course conditions.Reviewer Rating

Has potential but wait until the spring
First time at Merrist Wood on Sunday; only place we could get an early morning tee time at fairly short notice and at a reasonable price (£30). Expectations were pretty low due to other reviews, the recent sale (the previous week I believe) from Crown Golf (who I expect haven't invested much if anything for months leading up to the sale), and some seriously wet weather. However, although the fairways were saturated we had an enjoyable experience. Really the course should have been closed, the fairways were that wet but the greens were surprisingly good. The layout was better than expected too with a balanced mix of trees, water, ditches, changes in elevation and doglegs but the most interesting bit is the dramatically sloping greens. The grass range was closed as the new owners are apparently focusing on improving that first but large practice putting green and chipping area were open. Clubhouse was open though we didn't use it so can't comment. Pace of play was good, especially for a Sunday morning and in such wet conditions. The place has definite potential but their primary concern has to be drainage for the fairways. I'm keen to revisit next year in better weather and see what it's like then. Hopefully the green fees will remain reasonable.Reviewer Rating

Great value for money
Best value of all the courses on the A3 corridor. Very challenging with traps in usual landing positions means you need to plot you're way round the course. Any trip into the rough is likely to cost you the hole. Only downside on the recent visit was poor condition of the tee boxes.Reviewer Rating

Greens are poor
Challenging course if you do not find the fairways. Many of the greens in my opinion are embarrassing for a Crown Golf site. I think they need to look for a greenkeeper that can get these back to the old amazing standard.Reviewer Rating

No fairways - grass was as long as the rough
I wonder if this might be a nice course in the summer, but unfortunately it was extremely wet which meant they hadn't been out to cut the fairways. There was therefore literally no difference between the fairways and rough and it made finding your ball after a decent drive very tough.Reviewer Rating
