Merrist Wood Golf Club
The course is laid out in nearly 250 acres and at nearly 7,000 yards it is one of the longest in Surrey. When played from the championship tees it offers a real challenge to golfers of any standard. There are forward tees on all holes to ensure a challenge for any player to play to their handicap. The holes offer a great deal of variety. Water comes into play on 5 of the holes and strategically placed bunkers can catch wayward shots so there is a premium on keeping the ball straight on this testing course. Both the front and back 9 holes start and return to the clubhouse offering easy combinations of 9,18,27 or 36 hole events.

Well kept course, with lots of water and bunkers. Basically, if you hit it straight, you will have a trouble free round. Greens in excellent condition, some very hard to read.
All in all, a very pleasant roundThe Course

One of the toughest courses around, generally in good condition throughout, rough can be brutal in the late summer and some of the greens are Augusta like at times. Plenty of hazards and some genuinely stunning golf holes.

Course well kept as connected to horticultural college. Long course with a variety of holes, a good challenge. Recommend you avoid the ditches.

Interesting course with some really challenging holes (lakes, bunkers), but with reasonably open fairways so always get off to a easy start on each hole. Fairways were a bit rough in places, but greens were in fantastic condition. Friendly staff. Really enjoyable course.

Its a great course to play. Long with interesting and varied holes. Unfortunate problems with the irrigation systems means the fairways are hard and burnt. However the greens are in excellent shape and are running very true. I think the biggest problem with this club is the food which others have also mentioned in their reviews. Great course, average bar & food service.

i never get on with this course for some reason, its either too dry and rock hard or very boggy with not many days in between and the holes 9 10 and 12 are just silly.

Really enjoyed playing this course - some tricky holes, water to carry, some long holes to use the driver. The greens were in very good condition considering the winter we've had, quite fast but true. However - The club Pro made it pretty obvious he's not a fan of societies too - very surly. Biggest gripe - a few of us ordered club sandwiches, etc nearly an hour before our tee times. Two of the guys had to get them wrapped up to take with them. The aftermatch meal was ok though, taking this category up from fair to good.
If the service had been better this club would have got much higher ratingThe Course

Although I am fairly new to golf, I ventured out to Merrist Wood on Sunday 31st January for a new challenge as I had heard it is one of the finest courses available in Surrey.
I was immediatey taken in by the atmosphere and quality of all the facilities and was even more pleasantly surprised once I got out on to the course. Although astoundingly difficult for a beginner such as myself, the course was an absolute pleasure to play. With wide fairways pepper potted with immaculately kept bunkers (forsakeing the two which previous players had failed to rake over) the course offers an interesting challenge for beginners and seasoned players to complete it with their pride still intact!!
I have been searching for a club to become a member of and believe have now found it in Merrist Wood.
I recommend it to anyone who wants to improve their game or who simply enjoys a well thought out and fun course to play.

The course is a nice layout and should be a joy to play, were it not for the appalling state of the fairways. It's pretty poor when you'd rather be in the semi rough than on the fairway to ensure you get a reasonable lie!
Greens were pretty good on the whole as they seem to be at most Crown Golf establishments, a couple were bobbly.
Bunkers (and there are a few) have a good level of sand in them and play pretty well, just watch out for the foot prints that some of the players like to leave behind for you to find...
Sat nav in the buggies was a great help for yardages as the stroke saver is the worst I've ever come across.
Glad I played mid week as the condition of the course at present certainly doesn't warrant the £40 weekend green fee price tag.The Course

A challenging course, and if you miss the fairway then the rough is very difficult to get out of. Could improve a few little things to make it an excellent course.

Merrist wood is a great course, and always a challenge. Seems to play long, and has a few uphill holes to test you. The 17th over water and the 18th as a long par 5, are always a challenge, and you feel exhausted by the end! The clubhouse offers excellent full english and buffet dinners, and if you get a chance to dine, take it. You can usually get some great deals using Greenfree vouchers from Argos, or using teeofftimes, to get half price golf for £15 a round. Excellent value.
