Old Thorns Golf Club
Griggs Green, Liphook, Hampshire, GU30 7PE United Kingdom
This 6,581 yard, par 72 championship course was designed by Commander John Harris, one of Britain's best known course architects and completed by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas. The rolling nature of the landscape makes idyllic golf terrain. Peppered with mature trees, natural springs and several lakes which add to the visual pleasure of playing the course. Having been sympathetically designed for the less proficient golfer, this magnificent course still affords the better player a real challenge.

Course was good with fast greens. Pro shop not very welcoming, Pro was especially miserable and rude. Expensive as charged £30 for buggy plus £20 deposit for key: £5 for trolley plus £10 deposit for handle despite us staying at the Hotel for 3 days. Driving range so short you are not allowed to use woods. However, the hotel staff and facilities (pool, bar, restaurant etc) were all excellent.

I have been organising societies for over 15 years and the people in the pro shop were the most ignorant, arrogant and unfriendly people I have ever come across. I will never go back to Old Thorns again. Course is good but the greens were shocking.

Great course great views, it was raining very heavy with lots of surface water but this dispersed quickly one the rain stopped. Very happy with the course and facilities.

Very nice but tough course lots of trees and water so its really important to be straight off the tee. Driving range could be better great golf complex but have to agree with previous reviewer that the pro shop could be better. Delayed start by 2 hours because of frozen greens.

Took a golf society of 25 players here on Good Friday and the feedback from all the players was similar.
The course itself was in very good conditions, the greens will be amazing in a month or so.
The evening meal was a little disappointing
The clubhouse / sports bar was good as The Masters was live on all the TV's
All in all a great day and we may well be back next year for the Hampshire leg of our tour, unless anyone can recommend anywhere even better !!!!
The beer was a little steep at £4.80!- pint, but we still stayed til 23:00

First time back since the massive spend on the club house and facilities. Its a shame they didn't use some of that money on the course. I know its early in the golfing calender but I felt it could have been in better condition.
We've had very little rain in Portsmouth yet we were off at least 4/5 mats on the tee's. The buggies are only allowed on the cart paths which makes the course twice as long and slows up play considerably.
Food and drink very expensive, £4.50 a pint. £4 small bowl of chips.
For me the old 'Old Thorns' was more intimate and a better experience. The new is aimed at the hotel guest and corporate world, not the golfer.
Courses in the vacinity to compare, Liphook, Hindhead and Puttenham leave it in the 'shade'.

It's a great course. The greens are excellent and the fairways are tight if you want an easy round of golf don't come here. The pro shop is not bad but for the arrogance of the old guy but hey your there for the golf and if you do a bit of tinkering on the net or with vouchers you can get a bargain also don't bother with a buggy for £30 plus £20 deposit as you only need it for the end of the 2nd to the 3rd and 15th but overall 8/10

A lovely course with a superb clubhouse and facilities. Only wish they had water fountains on the course as we needed the odd drink going round on an extremely hot day. Overall well worth a visit. Some cracking holes. Will be back.

Just had a weekend package there, considering time of year and the weather we've had over the last few weeks the course was in good shape.
A lot of redevelopment going on, but excellent facilities..can only get even better.
Some fantastic holes, some gradients to climb!

With the hotel being increased in size from 33 to 82 bedrooms, this will become popular for short breaks - we paid £99 for 2 rounds, evening carvery, bed and buffet breakfast. The course is a real challenge - 30 stableford points is a very good round on this track! Be prepared for some steep hill climbs, even if you hire a buggy (expensive at £30) which you must keep to the buggy path. Take a camera (I forgot mine) - there are some spectacular views from the men's tees. Greens are quick and undulating and there are some sneaky ponds/ditches around to ruin your card.

A very good course which is more challenging than the score card would lead you to believe. Very hilly and quite tight in places but the condition of the course is fantastic. Remarkably quick greens and easy to three or even four putt on.

A high quality course, with changes in elevation, shaping of holes, water features and very fast greens to challenge players of all levels - the yellows are manageable for mid handicappers. A lot of building work going on at present to upgrade hotel, clubhouse, pro shop etc - when it is finished I would expect the green fees to go up but for the time being there are some good deals to be had online. Just a couple of minutes of the A3. Recommended.

Old Thorns pro shop are very unwelcoming. On top of this they 'accept' greenfree vouchers, but even though they quote you in 2 separate phone calls £25pp, they still insisted on charging us £30pp. We could have paid £30pp as we happened to have booked a twilight tee time anyway without our greenfree voucher, but they insisted on taking it. £5pp or a greenfree voucher isn't a huge amount - but the principle and also their attitude was second to everyone! Having said that the course was very good. Not going back in a hurry though!

An excellent and testing course with many variables to take into account on your way round.
A lot of work being done to the facilities in general and will be something special in a couple of years I would imagine but course unaffected and much more than just the scenic 5th hole with many memorable ones.
Would definitely go back.

Went with a group for a friends 50th, played Friday and Sat, would advise buying a course map, out of 16 on the Friday highest score was 31pts, the greens are fast and very deceptive even some of the low handicappers were three and four putting, some great views and some lovely holes, would go back, lots of building work going on, should be really good when finished, although took us 5 hours on the Friday because of so many golfers, really needs a marshall to help move players on, that will be the only problem.

Played a society day here today. Stunning course and generally in good condition but a couple of small gripes: here we are, nearly in May, and about 5 temporary tees were in use. Tiny square synthetic mats. Yet the tee boxes were in good nick and ready for action! Shame. Also the greens were a bit long and bumpy - that's not being critical just stating a fact. Clubhouse excellent and I recommend the breakfast!
