Matfen Hall Golf Club
Matfen, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, NE20 0RQ United Kingdom
The picturesque and fast flowing River Pont comes into play at several holes including the 14th, one of many strong par fours. The dog-legged 16th is the pick of the par fives, but Matfen's signature hole is surely the long par three 17th with its narrow green sited teasingly just over the river. Matfen's high quality nine hole par three course is ideal for the less experienced player. Other golfing facilities on site include a driving range, short game practice area and two practice putting greens.Book a Tee Time

Very open course, forgiving. Suited to a beginner as doesn't punish bad shots too harshly, but also has good length to test a more experienced player.

Winter open series in fantastic.
Bacon roll, cuppa and competitive golf in the middle of winter for £12.50 a man is excellent value.
Just wish they would introduce a local rule so you can pick, clean and place, through the green. Mud jockeys riding your ball for every shot.

When played the fairways had a lot of standing water on it which did not allow any run on the ball. Some interesting and challenging holes. Would play again

Played Douglas/Standing Stone 19/04/2011, 08:48 Tee Off. Fairways in good condition and the greens were in exallent condition bar 1 which was a little bumpy in certain areas. Great Staff and very good Pro-shop. Very helpfull. Would recommend to all golfers in the area to play.

Played Douglas/Standing Stone on Saturday 9th April 2011, 7.20am tee off. Greens were in excellent condition no daft bobbles or bounces, good spacing of tee times so never felt rushed or uncomfortable as always a shot between us, the group in front and the group behind. Well stocked pro shop and excellent bar with good food.

Played the Douglas/standing stone course on the morning and the Delaw 9 on the afternoon. the course is challenging in particular the standing stone 9 with a number of holes where the water comes into play especially when it is windy. The greens were excellent and it is worth a trip As we got the 18 holes on the morning for £20 each and the afternoon 9 for £10 through Teeofftimes.co.uk. Well stocked pro shop and the food was good.

very good course and i'm hoping to become a member soon. probably one of the most picturesque courses around... stunning greens and fairways... great condition all round and a good challenge... I prefer douglas 9 and dewlaw 9 as the standing stone is a difficult 9 of the 3 with all the water hazards. Overall i have really enjoyed my 3 rounds to date and hope to play more to get my score better

I have been playing here now for about 6 months and I find the 3 9 hole courses quite challenging. This gives you one of 3 options: Dewlaw/Standing Stone, Dewlaw/Douglas or Douglas/Standing stone (or any other combination of the 3 you can think of. I don't know if Steve is a scratch golfer but I don't know of any courses in the area that are as pretty or as much fun (Staley Hall being the main exception)

Played in gale force winds on 3 October - not a good idea! Started on the Dewlaw - the newest nine holes. Will take time for these holes to "bed-in" but they aren't anything special and I won't hurry to play them for a few years. The Douglas section, part of the original 18, was better but again nothing special. There are better courses in the region to look out for.

The 9 hole Dewlaw course was alot better than I had imagined - trees, water, dog legs, great par threes etc -well worth a visit!

This is a great golf course in a great setting.
With the introduction of the new nine holes (Dewlaw) the stroke indexes on the sccorecard might confuse people initially, but it's easy to suss out once you realise!
The course and the facilites are set up to a very high standard indeed, with the greens that last time I played being some of the truest I've come across. Almost every hole has some kind of feature (or should I say trap ?).
I fail to see how anyone coudl be dissapointed with this layout.

I've played here four times now and only broken 20 points once. It's open, easy to find you ball yet it stumps me every time. Even last year after I'd parred the first and thought I was going to have a good day the world still came tumbling down.
Like Rudding this course caters for corporate and vistiting parties so it is well used. Despite this the course is still well maintained and as I understand it they are also opening a 9 hole par three course.
Great facilities and good food
