This certainly isnt the best kept course in essex but people complaining about the rough. Come on its a golf course, the idea is you get punished if you hit a shot off line. As for being only one cut and you're in the rough, wrong there is in fact two cuts. I play this course a lot and have to agree about the bunkers, its not that there isnt any sand in them, theyre just not kept well and the sand becomes compact. The greens themselves vary greatly, in the winter theyre really slow but come the summer they can be near on impossible to stop the ball on. I personally dont mind this as its a challenge but can see why some wouldnt like it, id say its similar to playing on a links course without actually playing one. I dont agree about the fairways , although i do recall earlier in the year they couldnt cut the fairways because of how wet the course was, but as compensation when we played we werent charged for our round which you cant knock.

Its a long course and is usually windy but i like the layout. You get rewarded for good shots and penalised for bad ones which is what golf is all about.

I do think £26 is a bit steep , £20 would be a fairer price and yes it would be better with a proper clubhouse. The driving range is really good and they have one of the best club fitting set ups in essex.
Overall, an average course , slightly overpriced but a decent test of golf even with the dodgy bunkers.
As for those moaning about the rough, just a suggestion, hit the ball straighter , then you wont find it.

Probably the worst course I have played in Essex, would rather play the Pitch and Putt near the town centre. £26 for a round is absolute robbery, the owners must be laughing. I would pay £10 a round for this course. While it could be good, there are too many negatives, for example: Bunkers do not have sand in them, more of a soil/sand/dirt hybrid full of stones. If you hit your ball just off the fairway, you're in the rough... Not too bad, you might think: Wrong. There is only one cut of rough and it is knee high thick long grass that means you have a 90% chance of losing your ball.
The greens were by far the worst I have ever played on, large patches of brown dirt and very inconsistent speed due to the way they are kept. The practice green is astroturf so is pointless before playing a round. Although you could never practice for greens like the ones they have. There is also a mini golf course which we played for free, although I believe you are meant to pay for it, which is a joke in itself. A fun mini golf course which they should let people play on after the round to make up for how terrible the course is.
There is no bar which is slightly annoying but there is a pro shop that sold the essentials we needed such as tees and pencils, and they also sell some soft drinks and snacks.
One positive: the driving range is good.
2/10, would not recommend. Don't waste your time.

Nice setup to the course but poor quality greens and fairways. Easy to get on the course as it is rarely busy

This golf course is basically a field that someone has gone round and happend to put in 18 holes in the ground. It is dreadful. The rough is so long just off the fairway that it is almost impossible to find your ball. The bunkers are sandless, the greens are rough. The layout is basically round the field and back again.
Very expensive at £26 a round. Do not waste your money.

The course has a nice layout and is challenging with thick rough making hitting the fairways of extra importance. There are a lot of dog leg right holes playing into the hand of those with a natural fade. The greens have always been in poor condition whenever I have played here, as they are patchy and the grass is too long, making putting difficult as the ball tends to bobble off line consistently.

Greens awful. Just earth in places, and mossy grass in others. Long course with hazards, and quite interesting as such, but poorly kept. No clubhouse, so can't even get a drink (let alone a snack) after. And it's expensive! Good teaching pro, and good clubfitting facilities, but not so good for enjoying golf.

To be honest, at £26 a round was expecting a quality course. Plenty of dogleg holes and water to contend with. However, course, greens and bunker conditions were dreadful. Greens were 40% brown on most holes, bunkers had sand which had grass growing through, and were certainly not cared for. Course is in such a great location, but needs a lot of TLC. No bar either for aftergame drinks. Driving range facilities looked good, but not used.

I have played a number of courses in my life but none as bad as this for what you pay. If it was £10-£15 for 18 holes then I would have been more accepting, however for £26 it was appalling. The fairways were of poor quality and the greens were completely brown. That grass had died some time ago. The whole course looked like it was never watered. Most of my shots to the green that came in high bounced like they were hitting hardcourt and large plumes of dust flew up. The bunkers were not bunkers. The sand in them was minimal and they were full of stones and most of them were pretty much soil. I can understand that renovating the clubhouse may be costly but a coat of paint and filling up the large holes revealing wires would have been good. The carpet was repaired using stips of gaffa tape and the front desk looked like it was held together the same way. There are a number of courses not much further away from Chelmsford that provide course and facilities of a considerably higher quality for the same price or less.

Not that great for £24 more like a £15 course
Fairways ok but the greens were not good
Needed water and a cut. A roller wouldn't of gone a miss
Nice use of water around the course
Great for beginners as its open and forgiving

My local public course so one i play the most.
Generally well kept - although if you hit it in the rough then you have 80% of a penalty cos balls just disappear!!!
Greens a very inconsistent, and bunkers are virtually void of sand - mainly rocks and fibreglass matting.
Its £24 a round so i suppose cant expect superb facilities - but shame as if they spent a bit of money on general upkeep would be a good course instead of a fair one.
