Had earmarked this course as one i had hope to play whilst in the area. As expected of a links course, tough in places, but the greens were fantastic. Wish could putt on them all year (maybe just had a good day).
Played at twilight (£21 Bargain).
Staff very friendly and helpful, couldnt do enough for you.
Would play here again.A

A very good links course - not as spectacular as Nefyn but with excellent fast greens, even in mid-October, and a true test of one's bum-and-run prowess. You have to hit the fairway or you are in trouble, which is how links golf (the finest form of the game in my view) should be. Thoroughly enjoyed my game and the bar was superb - a number of real ales and even the brilliant Belgian Leffe on draught!

My first experience of a links course and what a fantastic experience it was. A real course and true test of golf and some fantastic greens.
Going out the holes hug the coast line and you get the real links experience with some strange wind conditions making for some strange golf. Playing links is also fascinating how conditions change on each hole in terms of wind speed and direction.
The final few holes move away from the shoreline which gives a much needed and easier route in although the well places gorse bushes and bunkers still can catch you out!
Fantastic day out and well worth a visit. Definitely an hidden gem on the North coast of Wales

A true links course - well it was about 10 years ago! To appease various ruling bodies who were approached to run their tournaments at Conwy, the fairways became less links like and more parkland. There is no longer the unpredictable run on the ball over dry brown arid fairways resulting in a lie that makes you think, but a ball that now sits up ans is ready for the same old, same old shot. All this is a result of fastidious nurturing, slitting and overseeding and a new irrigation system. Not as interesting as its illustrious neighbour at Royal St Davids, which incidentally does not have a fairway irrigation system. To summarise, if you played it 10-12 years ago then you saw this course at its best, it now costs more to play at £50 a round and isn't as enjoyable.
Conwy looks tired and unloved most of the year, it seems to reach peak playing condition only around the times when a major tournament is being held which must really annoy the members and the casual visitor who is expected to pay the extremely high green fee throughout the spring and summer what ever the condition. Otherwise playable conditions throughout year, given that it is a relatively dry well drained area of land, you will rarely get your feet wet, unless you go on the practice ground during the winter. If the right people were in place, it has great potential.
It is understood that the bunkers have being renovated, repositioned or filled in yet again over the recent winter, apparently there were many that were constructed poorly and the wrong sand has been used. Evidently, even the pros have complained under their breath and one top pro was quite open about it at the Seniors Open in 2008!
The gorse is scary! Don't go in there with your best lambswool sweater or Galvin Greens - it would be better if you had a suit of armour! It is a crying shame that there is very little maintenance carried out on the undergrowth beneath the bushes. If a ball goes in, there is a 99% chance that you won't find it for undergrowing ivy and you can't reach it anyway because of the out-of-control brambles that are intertwined with the gorse, most of which could do with pruning out. This is a major cause of play being held up, along with the punishing rough in the growing season, so prepare yourself for a possible 5+ hour round.
Restaurant/catering facilities. Quite expensive food, evidently a new celebrity chef is in place. At the last report, a mortgage was needed for a beefburger and chips! Not really what you would expect of golf club prices for basic golf club scran!
Pro - not everyone's cup of tea, but you need to make your own mind up! His shop is full of a lot of equipment that was available over 20 years ago!
The bar staff are very friendly and helpful.
Practice facilities limited. The putting green (unusually) is right behind the 18th green and is (strangely) in-bounds (see Rule 7-1b). You are expected to stop putting and stand still everytime anyone arrives at the 18th green.
The short game area doesn't represent anything like the greens on the course and if you want to practice bunker play you can either use the little one at the side of the club house with an astroturf green or trek out to the other side of the practice ground, (a good 5-10 minute walk).
The practice ground is a swamp from October to March and is covered in daisies and other varieties of wild meadow flowers the rest of the year when it should be mown, (which doesn't look like very often).
GPS and measuring devices are not permitted in club run competitions, (including Opens), and although some GPS will work, (those with downloaded photographs), don't bother bringing your Sky Caddie because they haven't been permitted to set foot on the course to map it! It is reported that it is the only "top" or championship type course in the North Wales area that refuses to sanction these very useful devices, the reason given is the threatened revenue from a massive over order of Stroke Savers, half of which are now obsolete with course changes.
Hardly an hidden gem, just an over played tired old lady.

My first ever links course, looks benign from the comfortable clubhouse especially on a sunny(ish) day in Winter. Once out on the track you'll soon realise that the course has two ways of protecting itself, the prevailing wind and the small, vicious pot bunkers that litter the fairways like a WW1 battlefield. The course was in tip top condition considering the time of year - tight, well kept fairways, wispy rough and fast, true greens.
Well worth a visit, take some warm clothing and enjoy it.

Great course - played in an absolute gale, but loved it. Those of a faint heart who like to play to their handicap or below should stick to their own backyards. This is links golf at its best. Stayed out of the pot hole bunkers (until the 18th greenside!), but didn't make 1 GIR. 27 points with only 1 blob shows how tough it is. Certainly the highlight of our holiday.

This is a typical links course and was used for the 2006 British Open qualifier.
The pot bunkers covering the greens are also in the fairways so placement of ball is paramount, land in one of these and your only concern is getting out.
Well defined holes and none the same, plenty of gorse on the last 6 holes and rough generally all over has an SSS of 74 set against the Par of 72 (off the whites).
Good borrows on the greens and quite quick although the wind (which blows most days) will determine how good you are at club selection.
Thoroughly recommended and a very good test for all abilities although in fairness genuine 28+ handicappers will suffer.

JUst PLayed yesterday. The course to be fair was in good condition, and with a solid breeze was very tough to play. I shot way over par, 82 I think so not a good day for me but enjoyed it nonetheless.
I was very surprised at the pace and receptivity of the greens. When playing an approach shot or a pitch shot into the green the ball did not hold and ran on a fair bit. However when on the green I found the pace particularly slow, especially for a links course of championship quality.
Good day out though and played with the same ball from start to finish! woo hoo

The Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open has just finished its second run at Conwy Golf Club. Peter Mitchell won by 2 shots (-3) over Ian Woosnam (-1).
These were the only professionals who played under par for the 3 rounds - nobody burnt it up!
This course is a b*****d. It is probably as difficult at this level as Carnoustie was in the 1999 Open Championship, and equally as unfair.
Jim Rhodes, who played in the last group, having been lying 3rd after the second round, hacked his way in and out of bunkers on the 13th hole. He could not play forward, backward or sideways. Being the professional that he is, he refused to take a penalty drop. He eventually finished way down the field with an unmentionable score.
Various comments from pros heard during the week were of the ilke -
"I can't wait to get away from this damn course"
"There's too much sand in the bunkers"
"These bunkers are a disgrace"
"The members who play here must be breaking their hearts"
You never hear the comments publicly, they have to uphold the image of the Tour, but it is quite obvious that there are many of them who dislike Conwy with a vengeance.
It is a very difficult course. It is not for the faint hearted and if you don't play off a reasonable standard, (i.e. low single figures), you won't enjoy losing all of your balls in getting round. You will probably be worn out tired when you come off 18 but you won't be "happy tired".
At around £50 a round it isn't an enjoyable day out with your mates.

Claimed as a Championship Course but is only in championship condition on or around the occurence of an event.
Although it is still a tough track, the rest of the time it looks tired and worn out due probably to the excessive number of visitors that it attracts and inumerable rabbit burrows. The gorse is not managed well and is full of litter and tin cans.
Certainly the green fee seems a little high for the high standard that the club claims.
It would appear that all the claims for championship quality/standard are on the back of recent and imminent events that have been held there, these being the 2003 Final Qualifying for the Open and the Ryder Cup wales Seniors Open which was held last year and again this year.
If you do want to play take plenty of balls and be prepared to lose them. The gorse which is to say the least is unmanaged, swallows them up on the closing holes in particular.
This course is not for the beginner. It will break the heart of a good player so if you are looking for a pleasant days golf and not a soul destroyer choose wisely.
