Stunning Devon Beauty

Have been to the Ashbury hotel many times and always look forward to returning. All of the courses here are real gems, with Beeches being no exception. A short(ish) par 68 shouldn't lull you in to a false sense of security as there are some varied and challenging holes to negotiate. The gentle par 4 1st eases you towards a tricky 160 yard table-top par 3 with trouble left, right and long. The next, downhill par 4 is magnificent, with a blind tee shot onto a multiple shelved fairway on a steep downhill. The course just keeps coming up with more surprises and little gems to keep you interested. On top of this, the staff do an excellent job at keeping it in tip-top condition, making it even more of a joy to play.
One word of warning; unless you are really fit, a buggy is recommended as this is a hilly course!
My only gripe, if there is one, is that in all the years I've been coming here I've only once played the lovely looking par 3 15th - every other time it has been out of action and replaced by the 15A.....

What a place to play golf!

If you get chance to go then by all means go. All the courses are in fabulous condition all year round and the views across Dartmoor are worth the trip alone. All the courses are nothing like you have ever played before and there is always something unique about each hole which just adds to the uniqueness of the place. Kigbeare is by far the best course there but all the courses are a good challenge for all abilities.

Part of the Ashbury Golf complex this is a short course which was played as part of a group trip, a good course to play as an opener as it is fairly wide and generous with no blind shots, Fairways and greens were in good condition, Buggies are a must but as they are only £8.00 why wouldnt you?

The golf courses themselves are in very good order and the layout as good as you will get with a few holes with long travel between tees but !!! Bring a SLEDGE HAMMER !! the greens are that SLOWWWW !! And get ready for long walks across the fairways with a handfull of clubs as you cant take the buggies off the designated paths !! SLOW PLAY !! IDIOTIC !!

Been attending for 16 years now, great value for money, omelettes delish. courses are designed for all standards of golfer and are a fair challenge. I will probably keep going for the next sixteen years at least. Staff are friendly and I think the bars stay open late enough taking into account that you will want to tee off earlier rather than later.

Stayed for 4 days at the Ashbury Hotel at the end of August. Golf and buggies included at the time so great value for money. All the courses are in good nick and present a reasonable challenge. Kigbeare is the most demanding and should not be attempted without a buggy. Recommend it.

Easily the most challenging par 3 course I've played. There are several bunkers, and 2 lakes that come into play on 7 or 8 of the holes. The greens were in good condition when we played. Some are short holes, but that just adds to the challenge for high handicap golfers like myself.

A fantastic course! The flagship course at the Ashbury complex, this alone is well worth the visit. Although a first glance at the scorecard may make you think it's a little short for a par 72 at 6100-odd yards, once you get out on the course you'll be glad it's not longer! Barely a hole plays without a severe slope one way or another; the first is all downhill and shots through the green or left will be punished; the second's narrow fairway slopes sharply left to right; and the third is a par 3 that drops around 100ft from the tee. The fourth plays over a ridge before doglegging down and right, but does offer an excellent scoring opportunity - big hitters who can hit a long fade can hit the green. There are some less daunting holes where you can actually see where you need to drive, but many tee shots are blind and poor positioning off the tee can cost you. My favourite hole was the 16th, a 534 (off the yellows) yard par 5. A long-ish drive over a lake will get you to the top of a 50ft slope; there's then 200 yards of flat before a sheer drop to the green; if you can work out the line blind long-hitters can take it on in two, but it's far more satisfying to lay up to the top of the downslope then watch your wedge hang in the air for hours on it's way down.

My one complaint is the same as the rest of the Ashbury courses, being a year-round resort with high traffic, the greens are very slow and a little bobbly. The fantastic scenery, general good condition of the course and mixture of holes more than make up for it though. If you're playing straight and think your way round the course, it is more than possible to build a good score, but if you're wayward or having a bad day it can get nasty quite quickly! If you're booking a break at Ashbury, book a couple of rounds on this course!
