Ashbury Golf Club Reviews & Information

What the club says: In total there are 5 eighteen hole golf courses - Oakwood, Pines, Beeches, Willows and our new course Kigbeare.

The courses occupy a lightly wooded parkland setting, in rolling countryside on the foothills of Dartmoor National Park. Extra hazards have been added to the natural ones already present, with dozens of bunkers and eighteen lakes making play even more of a challenge.

Four of us Played the Kigbeare course and have to say this was one of the worst courses we have played in Devon and Cornwall over the last 20 years.\\\\If you like to play a lot of blind shots then this is the course for you if not then go somewhere else. When playing the second hole wear a crash helmet as balls come across the hole from the driving range 2 balls just missed our playing partners.
We had to have Buggies so you then end up walking back and forth across the fairway as buggies have to stay on paths which makes play very slow over 5 hours is just not good enough.

As a beginner I really enjoyed playing the course. You must use a buggy, its not a course you can walk. Course was in excellent condition and I would recommend it to anyone. Hotel could do with updating, its stuck in the 70\'s.

Great course, have played each year for last 3 yrs. Allways in good condition, especially with the weather we have endured. Greens although not perfect, are quite quick.

Easily the most challenging par 3 course I\'ve played. There are several bunkers, and 2 lakes that come into play on 7 or 8 of the holes. The greens were in good condition when we played. Some are short holes, but that just adds to the challenge for high handicap golfers like myself.

The course is a nice course, however there are no stand out holes. The venue is brilliant though, several courses to choose from and the facilities are great.

8th to 12th October 2012. Remember there are thieves everywhere, even amongst the so called gentlemen of golf. Forgot to lock my Kinbag travel cover (square in shape)in a locker only to find a light fingered golfer had helped themselves after I returned from my game. I did not see any other Kinbags during my stay so what good would it have been to another golfer. So 'beware' and use the lockers.

A fantastic course! The flagship course at the Ashbury complex, this alone is well worth the visit. Although a first glance at the scorecard may make you think it's a little short for a par 72 at 6100-odd yards, once you get out on the course you'll be glad it's not longer! Barely a hole plays without a severe slope one way or another; the first is all downhill and shots through the green or left will be punished; the second's narrow fairway slopes sharply left to right; and the third is a par 3 that drops around 100ft from the tee. The fourth plays over a ridge before doglegging down and right, but does offer an excellent scoring opportunity - big hitters who can hit a long fade can hit the green. There are some less daunting holes where you can actually see where you need to drive, but many tee shots are blind and poor positioning off the tee can cost you. My favourite hole was the 16th, a 534 (off the yellows) yard par 5. A long-ish drive over a lake will get you to the top of a 50ft slope; there's then 200 yards of flat before a sheer drop to the green; if you can work out the line blind long-hitters can take it on in two, but it's far more satisfying to lay up to the top of the downslope then watch your wedge hang in the air for hours on it's way down.

My one complaint is the same as the rest of the Ashbury courses, being a year-round resort with high traffic, the greens are very slow and a little bobbly. The fantastic scenery, general good condition of the course and mixture of holes more than make up for it though. If you're playing straight and think your way round the course, it is more than possible to build a good score, but if you're wayward or having a bad day it can get nasty quite quickly! If you're booking a break at Ashbury, book a couple of rounds on this course!
