Always a great condition course

Always kept immaculate. If you pay full price guest price it is starting to get a little pricey.

Great course stuck in the dark ages

I visited here as a 2 ball with a genuine interest in looking for a club to join for 2020. This course is perfectly situated between myself and a friend who play weekly and I was bought this game as a Father?s Day gift.

I?d followed the Groupon instruction whereby I could only go out after 2pm at weekends in June and July (even though the weekend round is already more expensive that weekdays). However the morning of our visit, the weather forecast was for high winds and heavy rain from 4pm. I checked the website booking system and saw only 3 tee times booked between 12pm and 2pm so called the pro-shop to see that if we could get there early could we go out any earlier. The response back was very cut and dry that as a Groupon customer it was 2pm at the earliest. I asked then if I could pay extra and go out earlier, where I was advised the only option was that we would have to pay the full weekend green fee ?35pp and as we would be cancelling the Groupon without the required notice we?d lose the voucher as well and that this couldn't then be used at another time.

On arrival at the course the experience continued along this disappointing trail where after a fair walk from the car park to the pro shop to book in I was told I couldn't sign both of us in even though I had the printed voucher, so I had to wait for my playing partner to arrive, to then walk back again. Expecting to sign some kind of disclaimer or insurance waiver, all we had to do was write our name and email address in a book (no signature or special instructions etc) which made the initial me trying to book us both in seem even more tedious. We sat outside waiting for our tee time as were warned about not using our mobile phones on the patio area or anywhere in the grounds (this made tracking my scores/stats on golfshake impossible), then when finishing our round there were no staff anywhere to be found to buy a drink from, we waited in the bar for 5 minutes, then checked every room in all accessible buildings before leaving. We ended up going for our after round drink in a nearby village. The service there was excellent..... perhaps the club can get some tips?

It's so disappointing as the course is excellent, a great challenge with some very special holes, especially on the back 9.

All in all, I appreciate that rules are rules but when I read so much about dwindling memberships and golf clubs closing, this was a missed opportunity for this club to pick up 2 new members. Needless to say our search will continue for a new club for 2020.

Deceptively difficult course. Flat parkland course but rough is very unforgiving short but ball sinls down into it. Fairways and greens in very good condition. Greens very fast.

Does get a bit dull

Nice enough track but there are so many 380-400yd par fours and you feel you are simply going up and down and up and down. Could have done with a bit more variation.

I had been looking forward to playing here since a society I belong to played last year. This was my first game back after bowel cancer surgery in mid July, and I was very wary of trying to overhit shots. As a course it didn't disappoint. They've obviously added sand to the bunkers since one of the reviews, and it must have been very dry about a month ago, but it has 'greened up' nicely after some fairly heavy rain in the last couple of weeks. Greens were quite quick, with the ball rolling well and staying on the line you take. Quite large greens, so take note of the flag colours (details are on the scorecard). Weird to see a few wallabys bouncing around the fairways, which apparently escaped from the zoo some years ago. Holes are all tree-lined so difficult to tell each apart, and there do seem to be a lot of doglegs, usually left to right, but all in all I like the course and would definitely return. As a society, it was a little expensive - we normally get a full english for £35, but here it was only coffee and bacon roll, and I think we paid £40, but we were well looked after. The games moved quite smoothly despite a number of lost balls - definitely play a provisional if you're unsure where the first one has gone.

Hidden Gem

Nice course. Flat despite being on The Chilterns. Each hole is separated by trees so you feel quite secluded. Greens and fairways in excellent condition and only negative is the bunkers on a few holes have cheap aggregate sand in them. They could do with a few more bins round the course I only saw 2.
