Vicars Cross Golf Club
Established in 1939, Vicars Cross measures 6446 yards and has a par of 72. A parkland course set in 109 acres of Cheshire countryside with fine views towards the village of Barrow and Kelsall Hill. Considerable development work has taken place in recent years, including the reconstruction of greens and bunkers to USGA standards, to designs by a leading British golf course architect. The Club also has first class practice facilities with a 300 yard Driving Range, a 120 yard short iron area, a chipping green and a separate Putting Green. The recently refurbished Clubhouse provides a full bar and catering service. The Club has a main lounge which serves as a function room, a conservatory overlooking the course, a spike bar and a snooker room. The club also includes a Board room which can be hired for private meetings or dining.

Played in a fourball 3rd December for the first time here, 10.45 tee-off. Tremendous parkland greens for this time off year. I think they will be hard to beat for quality at this time of year. The greenkeepers and staff are doing a great job. The members are very lucky to have such a nice course in such good condition. From the pro-shop to the catering and bar staff we found very friendly and will definitely come back here many times.

Vicars Cross is situated just off the A51 4 miles from Chester City Centre but feels a 1000 miles away from the hustle and bustle and noise of surburban life. The course is in very good condition for most of the year and is kept that way by occasional closures after very bad weather - so do check before making a long journey after heavy rain.
The course is a fairly long, gently undulating parkland course with many interesting features including:
- a dog-leg approach to the 1st green around (or over) a cleverly hidden water hazard
- the long dog-leg par 5 2nd which tempts us regular slicers to attempt to pinch some yardage round the corner - An attempt which inevitably ends in a disastrous venture into a grove of new planted trees - and chipping out sideways with no guarantee of a clear 3rd shot
- the blind 7th "bell hole" which punishes anyone who tries to drive the obvious line close to the nearby trees by giving them no clear 2nd shot to the green
- the very short par 4 9th which looks like a par 3 but will still take a driver to get up the hill to. An ideal birdie opportunity, though.
The course finishes off with a deceptively short par 3 from an elevated tee - which invites a pitching wedge from the unwary but actually requires an 8 iron to get up to the pin on the higher tier of the stepped green for most mortals.
All in all, an excellent challenge for every grade of player and one that you'll be wanting to repeat again before long.
The good times don't finish on the course - After your round, try out the excellent range of hot sandwiches in the very friendly clubhouse - or peruse the stock in the newly refurbished pro-shop.
This is a private club that non-members will feel at home at. The atmosphere is cordial and relatively informal but manages to maintain high standards of etiquette without being stuffy or overbearing. (Wayne would approve!)
Overall, this club comes very highly recommended as far as this particular non-member is concerned. The Course

The location is beautiful and very picturesque. I went to Vicars Cross Golf club with my friend, who is a member, for a meal. It was amazing value for money, when you compare the menu to a cafe or restaurant in Chester centre. The food was all freshly prepared and served by very friendly and helpful staff. Everyone who works there has done such a brilliant job in making my visit so enjoyable. I would deffinately return and I highly reccomend the restaurant to anyone who is thinking of playing there.

Rated 3 by Sue Hughes onGolf course review of Vicars Cross Golf Club
I booked a round of golf for 4 of us through the pro shop and obtained a tee-time of 10.15am. We arrived in plenty of time (having driven some 70 miles) so took the opportunity to practice our putting and chipping before walking to the first tee, only to find a long line of members waiting to tee-off. We approached the waiting group and advised that we had a tee-time booked and we were due to tee-off next. We were met with a tirade of rude and impolite comments from one or two members who doubted the validity of our tee-time, at which point I considered it necessary to appraoch the Pro to sort out the matter. It transpires that Vicars Cross DO NOT operate a tee-booking system, yet they gave me a time when I telephoned one. NOT very organised. If they don't want visitors booking tee-times, then we should have been told at the outset. Eventually, the members apologised and allowed us to tee-off. We enjoyed the course immensely, a true golfing challenge, but to top it off, we couldn't get out of the car park without a members exit card. I would have to be pursuaded to visit here again, although a group of members playing in front of us were extremely friendly and polite.
