What the club says: St Andrews The Home Of Golf is a golfing Mecca for every golfer and realises the ultimate dream for golfers worldwide. From the iconic Swilcan Bridge on the Old Course to Tom Morris's masterful architecture on the New Course, St Andrews Links has developed over 600 years. The three championship courses; the Old Course, New Course and Jubilee Course run parallel to each other along the famous West Sands of St Andrews. Nestled on the opposite side of the Links are the Eden, Strathtyrum courses and the only nine hole course, the Balgove. A five minute drive from the town is the seventh course, the award winning Castle Course which offers dramatic views over St Andrews from its spectacular cliff top location.
I suspect most golfers would like to play the Old Course at St Andrew at least once in their lives. We got a tee time after three attempts in the Ballot, and were really lucky with the weather - a few light showers, but hardly any wind. You can't help but be impressed by the history of the course, and think about the famous names that have played before.
Whilst the course was in great condition, and the greens were in fantastic shape, the only real disappointment of the day were the caddies. It must be hard to have lots of experienced caddies on hand, given the number of people who play the course every day, but we were pretty disappointed with the experience and advice of our caddies. My caddie was ok, but with him being a 12 handicapper who rarely played, I didn't feel he was experienced enough to advise me. My girlfriend's caddie made the cardinal sin of not really asking how she played - as a result he was always asking her to go for greens in regulation, and not really asking how she preferred to play. His efforts pretty much ruined the back nine for her, and put a real downer on a day that should have been one of the highlights of her golfing life.
In summary - course good, overall experience not so good!
I recently got lucky enough in the Ballot and got the most perfect experience of the Old Course. The first tee will definitely grab your attention with the nerves but after that its a course to attack and enjoy!
Off the tee, it is very wide open and if you do have a caddy (recommended as I did not have one) it will definitely gain you at least 4 shots! The approaches are full of imagination and there are definitely multiple ways to create lots of chances.
Having said that, make sure your putter is hot! the greens are huge and very undulating in areas which is the biggest test on this course. Make sure you shoot at the right flag on the 7 double greens and fire in those birdies!
Walking down 17 & 18 is surreal! fans lining the course and watching you is something amazing and tops off an incredible experience at the home of golf.
We were lucky in just having a 10mph breeze but it is definitely a course to attack. I managed 6 birdies and could of easily been 9-11 if I'd made some more 20ft'ers.
Overall a day I'll never forget, but I definitely recommend a caddy if you want to gain shots 4+ shots.
Course was in impeccable condition, greens were really well maintained and fast. fairways were in excellent condition.

For a first time visit to St.Andrews this was a good course to choose as it is a well maintained course with wide fairways and no major challenges and the weather was kind to us! The staff were lovely and there is a good range for warm up.
(Round played: Aug 2017 - Score: 96 Handicap: 32.9)
The positive: great views and faciliies, challenging course layout
The negative: I thing the greens are a joke, too many gimicky, roller coaster layouts where it's a total guess.
For me it lets the place down, I wouldn't go back as the greens ruin it

An excellent course and a beautiful day. Great views of the Eden Estuary!
Would definitely recommend this course!

What a place for any golfer weather you have been playing for 6 months or 6 years well worth a visit and I would highly recomend the castle course just try not to take your score to seriously as all the greens are missing is a windmill a clowns mouth and Adam Sandler trying to find his happy place!
The Home of Golf! What more can I say? Course was in great condition, greens incredible for April. The setting and atmosphere are magnificent. Watch out if the wind blows!
(Round played: Jun 2017 - Score: 84 Handicap: 12.7)

(Round played: Jun 2017 - Score: 94 Handicap: 22.5)
The pinnacle for any golfer, a must for any bucket list. Extremely difficult coming back into the wind with lots of sneaky bunkers placing.
(Round played: May 2017 - Score: 88 Handicap: 13)
New course is alongside the Old Course so great views of the fairways and greens

Very forgiving course, wide fairways and a short course of the Yellow tees, very good to play for the mid to high handicapper.
