50x50
Take Plenty of Balls rated 4 out of 5

Reviewed Jun 11 2016

Remember fortune favours the brave.
They say, ‘if something seems too good to be true it generally is’ So when you on the radio “Lydd golf course play for £10 you may rightly think, ok it’s either wrong or the course is, well, poor.
However this is one of those rare occasions where it was true and I have to say, deal of the century.
Now there are some issues so let’s get some of them out of the way, but bare with.
When I pulled up, I like to feel I’m at a golf course, it’s a special day out. It does feel like that but I found myself saying “oooookkkkkk” To the left of the club house were some worn out looking golf carts, that Del boy would be selling, and to the right a lorry container which really needs to be moved out of sight. The spoil the look of the club house and the club,
Ok £10 for this round like I say, it is easy and justified to think the course won’t be all that.
Please bare in mind Take plenty of balls is all about the average weekend player. I have played on many courses, in many places, and this is a little cracker, and if you’re a novice it well send you crackers.
So Into the Pro shop was really friendly and helpful, still not sure handing over £10
This is long course over 6200yds of the yellow tees and a half marathon of the white.  Unlike far too many courses, has I found out via lots of balls, you really have to pick your way round.
Hole 1, short par four, 2 keep it straight then 3 to 17 can start to give your score card a bit of a kicking, especially if your just are blast it type of player.
The fairways are wide enough to give a little grace, the designer wasn’t totally heartless. I sometimes break down holes on a review, but why spoil your fun. Statically placed lakes, and there are plenty, hidden bunkers, where you may think I’ll just drive over that, but beware.
Dog legs with a lake or bunker if you come up short and lakes or bunker it you over cook it, all makes for a thinkers day out. Then there is the tough rough, its everywhere. ‘So the hits just keep coming’
There are risk vs rewards on so many holes but get it wrong and you will be punished, playing it safe, then play the right club and straight or you will be punished.  Tricky bunkers, (right of the green on 17 springs to mind) If you close to the front then you’re going sideways and add a shot to the card.
Played on a claimish day, but flat and open this course is, so open to wind, then it’s a whole new game, another day the wind might be different strength and direction, a whole new game. Bring everything including the kitchen sink, you may find a use for it.
The greens are large, testing and in excellent condition, with only a little bobble here and there but it was the end of the day.
The course itself was in really good condition. The only real criticisms on this would be, there are alot of pot, type holes as you walk around, white T box on six, around the right bunker on 7 were really bad. Grass is needed in certain areas and some other T boxs areas were a little scruffy.
I couldn’t figure why this slip in the attention to detail had been allowed to happen, given the rest of the course and greens are in such good shape.
With some TLC and a little investment, this course would be punching well above its weight.
Absolutely enjoyed playing this course. I am an average player and took a pounding, but so much fun. It’s you vs the course and elements and I can’t think of a better course in the area to improve your game. When back, well be back on there. I took a kicking in the middle part, so we have a score to settle.
Anyone thinking of playing this course I strongly recommend you visit the clubs website and look at the course details and take notes on distances etc. Perhaps the club could print out course guides for poor unsuspecting 1st timers.
The club house is small but really friendly with a nice driving area out the back.
Overall this course as to be on any play list for this part of Kent.
Overall, even handing over full price of 18 nuggets with a bacon roll thrown is worth every penny, £10 a round is an absolute no brainer, go play.
Take plenty of balls????  Ohhh yyeess, you may just need them.

Great Layout

Links style with lots of water, which gathers your ball up, so position off the tee is vital. The course is a challenge, especially the back 9. Greens generally very good, 2 or 3 of them and tees need some TLC but bunkers and fairways excellent. Played on a fine day with a moderate breeze. If you score well around here you have earned a stop at the 19th which was open all be it al fresco and was welcoming. Will try to return soon.

Tough Course but so Emjoyable

Lydd is my home course and and I try to play as often as I can. It's a tough course with lots of water and even more wind. Essentially a links course but with quite a few trees. A good mixture of holes 3 x Par 3', 2 x Par 5's and the rest 4's. Water comes into play on pretty much every hole and there are some horrible runs from the fairways to the water and ditches so you have to be quite accurate on some holes.
The condition of the course is excellent with good quick greens, but my only moan is that sometimes the Tees could be a bit better, but Rabbits are a major factor in this.
A lot of people do not like playing Lydd because of the wind and water but I think that these factors only make Lydd more of a challenge. If you can go round Lydd and post a decent score then most other courses should be a doddle.

Trevor

A friend and I played this course yesterday and despite there being little wind found it to be a fair test of golf.

We played off the White tees and the course was well set up and challenging. There are lots of drives were the fairway pinches in at around 200yds so accuracy and placement was key to a good score.

The greens were well maintained and had a consistent pace.

There are lots and lots of bunkers on the course and they are not so well maintained and the one thing that lets the course down. Weeds are abundant in them and they show little sign of having been raked on a regular basis.

That said, the course is in a lovely setting, it's a bargain green fee and few will break their handicap on their first visit.

run down but cheap

Lots of bunkers with no sand and tee boxes are bad. However greens are decent and fairways OK, cheap round of golf but don't expect too much from the course.

Great value links tester

Great value links course, paid £10 for a twilight round after 3pm. Greens are a little dry in places but course has benefited from the rain over the last few days, always a bit of a breeze near the coast which helps to make this well laid out course a good test of course management.

Did not know very much about this course beforehand so expectations were on the low side to be honest. How wrong we were; this is a little gem! Plenty of risk and reward if you are on top of your game, and enough room for the higher handicaps and beginners to work on their game.

Very friendly in the Pro shop, we changed our tee time twice but there were no dramas, and got a very acceptable bacon roll and coffee thrown in for £18.50 midweek.

If there are any downsides to speak of I'd say that some work is needed on the clubhouse itself - works are in progress but it is generally looking tired. Around the course itself some wear and tear tidying up wouldn't go amiss. Again, in places, work is ongoing.

Well worth a visit.

Played in February and course was in fine condition. That coupled with the 12 pound green fee means it was very hard to fault this course. Some good holes, loots of water and a good test. Great value and one to play if in this neck of the woods.
