Gosfield Lake Golf Club
On 230 acres of rolling Essex parkland to the north of Gosfield Lake, where once the court of Queen Elizabeth I took the air, golfers now enjoy peace and tranquillity away from the bustle of modern life. In this idyllic setting the Course winds around and over the lakes, through woods and across streams in some of the most beautiful countryside in England. The Championship Course here at Gosfield has the potential to become the finest inland test of golf in England" so said Sir Henry Cotton. Sir Henry was responsible for masterminding the design of the 6,700 yard Lakes Course and the less demanding 9 hole Meadows course in association with Golf Architect, Howard Swan. Played here with a couple of members who knew the course, but omitted to let me in on their secrets. A bit plain for the first few holes gets more interesting on the hillier mid-section. Greens had suffered during the winter and weren't particularly true or consistent. Fairways defined by horrible long, wispy grassthat made it impossible to play out of, if you could find the thing in the first place.
14th is a cracker, get a long drive for a shot to the green over the water or lay up to the side for a safe 5. Got my first ever proper birdie on the short 17th.

I have had the pleasure of visiting Gosfield many times over the years, Cotton did a good job and I would ask that money be spent to improve the tees which are poor, the fairways are good as are the greens which are true and firm. attention is needed as some trees have died but have been left standing showing a lack of TLC but the greenstaff, lakes and wild life are loverly, club house is comfertable and the food was good, all in all always a plesent day out
